MINI DISC recording question

someone said they had a set but that it was recorded with a Mini Disc and the quality wasnt that good.....

So should i assume that recordings of sets with mini Discs are NEVER good quality...do they just not record the set good????

i have never heard one

anyone know?

=)

Shame / Disagreement

The only ones I have ever heard are really bad because you are still recording with a microphone so you get all kinds of unwanted noise. So unless you are recording straight off the line out onto the minidisk, you are gonna get sound you don't want.

No, a lot of people actually argue that the ATRAC recording of MD is better than their equivalant of MP3s. If they hooked it straight into the mixer they could basically just "record" the set, analog, of course, but noting from your other post the quality is said to be crappy so they probably recorded using a microphone hooked into the minidisc player. Then it all depends on the mic used, how the levels were set, position of recorded, sound system used.. etc. Anyways, MD can sound very good depending on the situation.

Whenever I mix a set and want to record it, I always connect my MD recorder to one of the line-outs of my mixer. The quality of the recording has never been less than brilliant... so the only 2 resons i can think of for the quality being bad are...

1. The fool recorded the set with a microphone plugged into his/her MD recorder.
2. He/she had the output of his/her mixer too high or the input of his/her MD recorder to high, which distorts the sound.

MD is great, and I can't wait til they start making mixers with digital outs...!!

First bit of advice for ANY Minidisc user: GO TO http://www.minidisc.org/ FOR MORE INFORMATION ON MINIDISC THEN YOU CAN EVER FIND. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. GO HERE BEFORE YOU BEGIN ASKING QUESTIONS BECAUSE YOU PROBABLY WILL FIND YOUR ANSWERS THERE.
Second, MD's sound quality is better than MP3 now with the new Type-R DSP. With the newer MDLP units, you could record double or quadruple the time on an MD without losing that much quality. I highly reccomend using the LP2 mode, though. It offers double recording time (160 minutes for an 80 minute disc), while maintaining most of the quality that standard (SP) mode offers. Using LP4 (offers 4 times the space (320 minutes on an 80 minute disc)) mode may introduce artifacts into the recorded sound and isn't recomended for recording live.
As for the Microphones, this can also affect the quality of the recording drastically. http://www.minidisco.com/ has lots of mics, as well as other MD gear from Japan. Don't worry, even though it's from Japan, everything's in English, including manuals. http://www.japan-direct.com/ is the BEST place for MD gear. they ship straight form Japan and get everything first!
Any other questions??? Go to http://www.minidisc.org/ for ALL your answers!

Well, from personal experience i can tell you that a Md recording comes very close to CD quality...However, there are many factors to be considered when recording from a mike ( i believe this was mentioned) you need a good quality mike and the levels have to be set up just perfect or else the distortion is horrid, positioning of the mike also has to be taken into consideration.

MD should be the recording tool of the future, very easy to record.

MDLP? Man, i really don't like the quality they produce, it is SOOO much different from the original, the bass line seems shallow, the high notes are nowhere as crisp as they should be...MDLP2 is tolerable, but stil...

I see what you mean about MDLP4...
LP4 isn't that good.. I hear artifacts from it... I think 90 minute-or-better discs should be made if it's going to be better than CD. 99 minute CDs are out and that's the ultimate replacement to any recording situation (besides DAT)... Any other questions? http://www.minidisc.org/ ..... Levels should be set to around 20 out of 30 (maybe 18 or 19 out of 30) for a SONY portable MD recorder to leave a good distortion margin. If the final recording is too low, you can use a sound editor to up the levels.. Just stay below distortion level (0 DB) and you'll be fine...

9o+ minute MDs would be amazing, cuz if anything, as convinient MDs are, the amount of music (some 75 odd minutes) are not enough
I totally agree about the distortion levels, leave as MUCH room as you can To 0dB, you can always boost up the volume...however there's one problem, if you are using a mike the hissing noise will drive you crazy

The current total time of an MD without LP is 74 minutes (really 74 minutes, 59 seconds if you count what the screen actually shows right before a recording is made to a disc that Erase ALL was performed on). There are 80 minute minute disc out there but, they cost higher and only offer 6 more minutes, as opposed to MDLP2, which will offer 12 more minutes... 90 minute MDs should come out because MDs are meant to replace cassettes (for which 90 minutes is very common, even though 100, 110, and 120 minute DO exist)) and if the 90s don't come out, then the only choice for live, long recordings is DAT, which offers very long recording times (over 5 hours!) on a single tape. If you want to get those 300 minute DATs, go to www.tape.com and look for 150 Metre DDSs (1 metre = 2 minutes). Don't worry, DDS tapes are perfectly good for your audio DAT. They're made the same way. For more questions, e-mail me... [email protected]

I recorded at LP4 and didn't notice a loss in quality.. maybe I just don't have audiophile ears I guess..
