I need your help.

After weeks of researching both ta and google - I am currently in a dead end.
First off, heres what I owe:

1 djx700 mixer
2 numark 1910
1 serato scratch live
1 toshiba notebook

I am currently on the hunt to get technics 1200... and a better mixer - and thats where it complicates.

For many years I've been producing and as a hobby - mixing with software.
I think I started mixing with Atomix version 1 back in 2000 and since I got extremly efficient with this "computer" way of mixing.
NOW,
To whoever knows atomix or VDJ or Traktor, there's usually 4-5 buttons serving the purpose of looping the current output.
This is where I get lost as far as mixers are concerned.
I'd like to reproduce that same loop effect (1 / 2 / 4 / 8 / 16 etc) with a mixer.
I DO realise that both the DJM-600 and the DN x1500 have built in sampler capabilities. But is this the same thing as "on the fly looping" I am reffering to above, if not how does it differ?
Also there are mixers out there with all kinds of effects, is there any of those so-called effect that could serve this purpose? I seriously have hard time understanding how big djs using the Xone or Ecler mixers are surviving without this feature (unless they all carry around external samplers)

Well, CDJs bring looping features but that's about it. Vinyl can have loops if it has a locked groove (it will play forever) but as far as the samplers, unless you're really good at sync, you won't be able to use it, because as far as i know samplers only throw the sound once (meaning, it captures audio, you press it, wait for it to end, then have to press it again to restart. meaning you'll have some clicks/silence between it). There is only 1 way I know, and that's putting the echo on maximum depth on the EFX-500 and close the channel and let it loop, then you can chop it down (from 4 beats to 2, 1, 1/2, etc) but then you can't put it back on, so it's not as handy...

you can do some on the fly looping with the djm, it takes some practice to get it to sound right, but it can be done

i've only recently begun to toy around with the sampler and what it can do, but i don't get much time on the decks outside of a club setting and i normally don't want to test new stuff out in front of a crowd until i know i can make it sound good

oh and forgot to mention, there are some loop-hardware out there like cycloops that do that job. i also thought you could apply an echo to the sampler and loop it forever, but i dunno if you can assign echo to a sampler and manage to work it on a separate channel so that you can chop it, eq it, etc..

the sampler on the DJM wont record long enough for a 32 or 64 count.

i think your best bet would be to use CDJs the CDJ-800 has great looping. the denon DNS 5000 has a sampler that you can loop into and manipulate with the platter. or you can use software in your FX loop.

on the ECLER NUO5, if you use the DELAY effect at 1/2 beat, with 0 resonace (like, 0 echo effect), if you keep moving the WET/DRY x-fader along with the beat, it actually creates an on-the-fly loop, similar to what youre describing.

But yeah, if you want a real loop-type effect, most current CD players have that option.

thks for the replies,

@ benoitfan - I will do some research on the 500.

@ vero
Cdjs : This is the first thing my local dj store recommended.

I'm not sure if thats the right way to go - as it would not really complement my 800$ investment towards SSL.

looking forward to see what some guys that are spinning outside have to say abot all this mess

check this out: Ableton+Interface (firewire or PCMCIA)+UC33e+at least 1 gig ram for that toshiba, and as long as you got a FX loop, you are good to go.

So vinyls are not good for looping?

I am also thinkign about getting Serato scratch with Vinyl, or getting only the Cdj's.

The DNX-1500 has an on-the-fly looping effect which is really rather good very easy to use, you just select how long (either in beats or milliseconsd) you want to loop then after the first time through you turn the mix control right round to max and it starts looping

Most DJs get away with using the Xone mixers because most DJs don't use looping... they just play records boring I know!

wow, I wake up and see your post and it makes my day.

I played around with the ecler, xone and the denon and liked all of them equally - hard not to after owning a djx

however the x1500 is the most affordable for me.

As for dj's not using looping, well I guess I learned something.
Even though its hard for me understand how a song with a short or no outro can be properly mixed, I'm taking your word for it.
