Experimental Issue - Finish? yay or nay...

This is a trance that I abruptly started working on a few nights ago... and have been grabbing at it a few times yesterday. I was feeling loud and experimental when I introduced "overdrive" to a gated supersaw. At first, to me, it sounds more like a rock concert... but a friend of mine is concerned with there being too much "hiss & shatter" in the anthem-lead.

The song is called "Cause and Effect":
Band Page

Do you think I should scrap it, or remix it?
Other than that... it's unfinished and unmastered:
1. Need more effects... and a better pad.
2. The bass needs a new EQ
3. Vocal needs to have a side-chain compressor on a number of instruments
4. Strings need less reverb and more OOMF...

I'm concerned because the Overdriven Industrial Supersaw looses it's power when I try to mix it without the overdrive. However, it sounds like it's clipping with the overdrive. Do any of you feel the same way, it's too soft without the overdrive to me, but too nasty with it.

Electronic Monk... Damn it.. I know you from somewhere... holy shit, you ARE Northern_Fist from Futureproducers! And all the time I didnt notice that, lol. ...You may have noticed I havent posted there for a long time... I wanted to reduce my forum time a little...

On to your track.
Now listening to your track the third time in a row, the first two times it was playing in the background and it felt quite relaxed. It causes no distraction or disturbance and got a good flow.

I dont think I have too much to complain about. Your production and synth design skills obviously have gotten a lot better. The kickdrum works well and the bassline is quite stereotypical, but well done.
However you got a pad that gets VERY, if not awfully high, they hurt in the ear. Lower them one or two octaves, or turn the sharpest frequencies down. But you said you need a new pad anyway.
0:40 until the breakdown is a great passage, got me tapping my feet... I think its a quite well arrangement of things
The gated choir pad (?) is causing some distortion and clipping with the saw. In my opinion things can get rougher in a harder Psy or an Industrial tune, but not in that kind of "clean" Trance tune you are trying to make.
In general it needs some EQing, there are various places where things are clipping. I would start to fix it just by reducing the volume level of some of the mid-range instruments.
About the vocals, instead of sidechaining them I'd rather try some compression on the vocals with peak surpression (a higher threshold, medium ratio and a higher volume gain). Just give it a try.
Nice work and I could well imagine this as a rather calm melodic trance tune. You already got a lot of the work done, now its time to finish it

Hello!

LOL!!! You've busted my alias... Thanks for the warm welcome, man... appreciate it.

Yep... that pad is too high and sticky...

I'm actually thinking of roughing up the bass a little bit. A new bass-patch that I'm working on that is more industrial. The motif that I'm really trying to look for is dreamy-industrial-dance that's still euphoric (I'm always a sucker for those crazy anthems). Yeah, it's hardly as "rough" as anything psy/goa, of course, but I'm gonna be adding a pinch of "hard" trance in the remix of this mix.

I like this tune, it chugs along nicely. choir pad sound ok to me, but it is fractionally distorting i think towards the end of song. the song has a good vibe.

I like the song in general but I feel it doesnt go quite in the right way of a traditional build up/middle/end to work better on dance floor, im not to sure where its going - but this is only a samlple.

are u from USA? is trance big very there?

An incomplete sample at that...

Yep... I'm from USA (Northern midwest, Minnesota). Trance is very small here, sadly. Most of us American's prefer to listen to rap, rock, or pop - MTV culture bullshit. Most American's are more concerned about the celebrities themselves instead of the music - or so it seems. I have nothing against rap, rock, whatsoever, but it's become, well, commercialized beyond recognition sometimes. Rap is so full of vulgarity and violence and trying to make sluts of women that it's not usually very appealing to me.

Since I live in "redneck-ville" - there's also country music big here. Spare me from the excruciating pain of country music; most people listen to music to get away from it all - not country. Country music is the biggest Soap-Opera there could possibly be genre-wise; totally making a caractacture of life into something morbidly annoying.

Rants aside... if I ever wanted to go clubbing to EDM, well, I don't think there's such a thing here anymore. I'd have to wait for some international titan (Oakenfield, Corsten, or Infected) - to come to someplace like New York or San Fransisco - and then wish I had the money to afford the gas to go there. I blame that primarily on lack of exposure, but MTV culture is too big over here.

Wow! the first straight talking - almost cynical yank I ever met. (and for a redneck too! - you must be real unique person around your area)

I agree with you say about rap/women - its sad. Come on over to England where the real Trance is at - dont stop making those tunez!!

Maybe I will !

Back on topic... I've decided that the bass wasn't dirty enough - but I've never programmed a "dirty dream trance" bass that I'm envisioning. Wish me luck.

after your kind and helpful words i guessed you would be one to check out... so here i am.

starts really nice and evil in my opinion. lovely drums. and great epic sounds. i recon that vocal sample kinda makes it loose some of its sophistication as does the vocally synth sound used through most of it. first break is nice but im not a great fan of the pulsing sound that comes in at 0;41 with the kick. but love the high pads and layers that you got goin down. i really like the main break also and when the kick comes in its really nice and subtle. i think my only issue is the synthy sounds that sound almost too 'typical' trance. crisp stuff tho none the less.

thanks for sharing.

rich
