Getting jobs for friends...

...should one do this or should one not do this?

Let us know some stories of good and bad.

If a friend gets you a job are you going to work extra hard to prove yourself and your friend?

I don't think a friend should get you a job....maybe put in a good word for ya with the boss or something. It has to be up to the individual to earn the job.

I once got a friend a job doing coat check at a bar I was workin at. At about 130 am the bar holding the coats fell because she stacked too many on it, and they all fell on the ground in one nice pile. She walked out, and when I was done shooting (i was the shooter girl there - for one night) I stepped up and helped everybody get their jackets instead of doin shooters for the last half hour (Didnt get paid extra for it either - the owner screwed me over bc it was MY friend)

I am NEVER getting that bitch another job again. :|

if it was somebody more reliable, I definitely would.

--> worst part about it, she didnt apologize or nothing when I got home, we were roommates at the time. She had nothing to say for herself whatsoever.

i say yes, but that doesn't go without knowing ahead of time that your friend is fit for the job. i wouldn't hook them up with a job just 'cause they're a friend. keep it realistic, your reputation is on the line.

and to answer your last question, yeah you have to.. don't you think?

3 things you don't do with friends (worth keeping) and family:

1) loan money
2) do business (including getting them jobs)
3) fuck (literally or otherwise)

I learned this the hard way.

I got another friend of mine a job at my company but all I did was give my boss his resume and put in a good word. She picked him over the other candidates so if he fucks up, it's her fault.

I think it is ok to show them the opportunity. It is up to your friend to prove they are the right person for the job.

It truly depends on the friend.

I don't discount my friends if I know they're good workers and get their stuff done.

Caveat however; you refered them, so make sure they're worthy...

There is a BIG difference between giving advice/direction and pulling strings/making recommendations.

In the past year I've gotten 4 friends a job. So far It has been successful 50% of the time. I'm still on the fence about this one. Lately I'm in charge of looking for new staff for my dept and I'm leaning towards neutral places rather than friends.

I wouldn't do it unless you really trust that friend. Be realistic about it - does your friend _really_ fit the job? It's not worth putting your own reputation, your own job, or even your friendship on the line if you have the feeling that friend might not like the job, will leave it after a few months (when it's suppose to be longterm), or will simply really mess things up. Like everyone else said, depends on the friend really.

agreed.....you put yourself in a horrible situation if you doing the latter. I don't know if I would risk doing that unless you are fully confident in your friend and their work ethic
