Drunk Pat Robertson calls for assassination of Venezuelan president

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9047102/

quote:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson called on Monday for the assassination of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, calling him a “terrific danger” to the United States.

Robertson, founder of the Christian Coalition of America and a former presidential candidate, said on “The 700 Club” it was the United States’ duty to stop Chavez from making Venezuela a “launching pad for communist infiltration and Muslim extremism.”

Chavez has emerged as one of the most outspoken critics of President Bush, accusing the United States of conspiring to topple his government and possibly backing plots to assassinate him. U.S. officials have called the accusations ridiculous.

“You know, I don’t know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we’re trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it,” Robertson said. “It’s a whole lot cheaper than starting a war ... and I don’t think any oil shipments will stop.”

Electronic pages and a message to a Robertson spokeswoman were not immediately returned Monday evening.

Venezuela is the fifth largest oil exporter and a major supplier of oil to the United States. The CIA estimates that U.S. markets absorb almost 59 percent of Venezuela’s total exports.

Tense relations

Venezuela’s government has demanded in the past that the United States crack down on Cuban and Venezuelan “terrorists” in Florida who they say are conspiring against Chavez.

Robertson accused the United States of failing to act when Chavez was briefly overthrown in 2002.

“We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,” Robertson said.

“We don’t need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator,” he continued. “It’s a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with.”

Idiots like this make religion look bad. Unfortuneately, this isn't just about religion. It's also about Chavez controlling 10% of the oil coming into America. And America being the terrorist by trying to off him. Just like Noam Chomsky said, "If America wants to stop terrorism, they should stop participating in it"

It's funny how contradicting religious fundies can be... And it's hillarious that US is accusing other countries of religious extrimism when they have guys like this one in their own country.

Are you for real? This is a supposedly religious leader, calling for the assassination of another person. And for what? A bunch of unfounded claims? Isn't this guy supposed to be an example for other Christians, not to mention a public figure who represents a religion? This is why many people don't like religion, because idiots like this first tell you to love one another, etc. Then turn around calling for death.

Yeah exactly, some of the pillars in christianity is to love everyone and to turn the other cheek, don't kill people etc?

And yoepus, I dont think anyone on this board denies that people blowing themselves up in the name of islam etc are fundie. You are a perfect example of someone who wants to stop extremism yet dont realise you have it in your own country in your own religion?

Yep. And in this country, religion has strong ties to politics. E.g. God Bless America, Manifest Destiny, Nation Under God, etc.

This religious guy you might consider bad but look at Benny Hine, Joel Osween and Tonyy Robinson. They are a lot worse than this Pat guy. Also religion according to this survey is very important to Americans. More than 70% believe religion should be one of the governing factions in this country.

If he is a religious leader, what religion does he lead?
He did not call for the assassination of Chavez, he simply said, if they guy things were after him we might as well be after him.

And perhaps you misunderstand religion, unless you are budisht religion does not absolve you from having evil or to act against it.

Christianity does not tell you not to kill people. Pat is for the death peanlty I am sure as well. It does tell you you should be nice to people.

No, perhaps you misunderstand your religion. But Christianity does not condemn you from killing others when necessary. Yes you are supposed to forgive, and turn the other cheek, but in this case you are a) dealing in the case of state b) have a person who admits no wrongdoing. Christianity similarly allows judgement on criminals on this earth. The scholarly argument of religious theologist is that man must make the judgement on earth, the kingdom of men, as best he can, be it right or wrong, and God will make the true judgement in the afterlife, his kingdom.

Which country or religion is that?

There are always extremist. A recent example would be that settler in the west bank that shot up a few Palestinians. In away it is necessary for society as diverging opinions is what allow us to make the best choice. However, a society which tolerates and promotes extremism is different from those that attempt to prevent it from occurance.

He isn't telling followers of his faith to assasinate the guy, he is just saying in his opinion the US government should take the guy down. We all have an opinion.

You gotta be kidding me, are you stupid or something?

He specifically called for the assassination of Chavez, it was so specific that the White House had to issue denials that it was considering it.

And Yoepus, FYI. The reason these Christian nuts defend Israel is not because they "love Jews" -- oh no, quite the contrary -- but because they want to see their biblical prophecies fulfilled where the Messiah arrives and all the Jews are eventually killed or converted. Having a healthy Israel is just an important chapter in their little story.
