This will be a very important test as to how far the gov can intrude in our lives

Lets hope they win or we will be facing even more intrusion and social engineering in the future.

TORONTO (CP) - Opponents of the country's first provincewide ban on pit bulls argue Ontario's new law will unintentionally apply to too many other dogs.

In announcing a constitutional challenge to the ban, lawyer Clayton Ruby called the law "too vague" and "overly broad." He says the legislation lists a number of breeds that are "substantially similar" to pit bulls. That, he says, will cause confusion for owners and animal-control officers.

The new law forces all dogs covered by the legislation to be muzzled and leashed in public.

Owners who violate the law can face jail time.

Ruby says there is no evidence pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds.

"A number of experts will say . . . that there is no scientific basis to conclude that pit bulls are any more dangerous than any other dog," Ruby said at a news conference Monday.

"Because the government didn't listen, we're asking the courts to listen."

The legislation captures dogs that are a problem, but also a large number "that are not part of the problem," Ruby said.

"That is a huge number of dogs," he said.

The plaintiff in the case is Catherine Cochrane, 22, who owns an 18-month old pit bull mix female dog named Chess.

Cochrane said Chess is a well behaved dog and shouldn't have to be muzzled because it won't let her learn to be a well socialized dog around other animals.

"I'm afraid that I'm punishing her," Cochrane said.

On Sunday, hundreds of supporters of pit bull-type dogs gathered in front of the provincial legislature to protest.

Those who have been victims of pit-bull attacks, however, said they were pleased the law had finally kicked in.

good...let them revise the laws to be more specific and enforceable.

I have a problem with this one line though: "Ruby says there is no evidence pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds".

Even if it's negligent owners who are to blame, I can't train my parents little pommeranian to rip someone to shreds, even after shooting it multiple times. Certain breeds of dogs ARE more dangerous than others in that they have the capacity to cause FAR more harm than others and cannot be easily subdued if they attack.

That also doesn't jive with what animal experts have put forth, namely that the brains of certain types of what are loosely termed "pit bulls" function differently than other dogs (e.g. the permanent "attack mode" they can enter).

I'm a dog lover. Always have been. Always will be.

I have a half-husky half-german shepperd
My GF has a Boxer

But I have to side with this ban, even if the wording is off.

I read in one of the papers that Pit Bulls, which account 1% of the dog population, are responsible for almost 50% of attacks.

Now to me, that itself is enough to deter me from ever wanting to be in the same room as one of these mutts.

Reword the law and lets keep these things under control.

so where have the pitbull bites been this year?

Did the pitbulls suddenly stop biting or did the media lose the ability to scare everyone?

Next up in the media agenda... sudden reports about a new wave of dog bites from (pick a breed) in order to scare people again.

And you guys buy into it, thats the worst part.

Pit Bulls

It might interest you all to know that in the past 20 years out of 50 fatal Dog attacks ONE was caused by a Pit Bull. It might also interest you all to know that Pit Bulls were not originally bread as fighting dogs but as guide dogs (ie Hellen Keller) and companion dogs for children. This ban is clearly an infringment on EVERYONES rights and sets a dangerous precident. People who want to breed dogs to fight will just pick another breed of dog and that one will get banned and so on until you have a situation such as in Italy where 27 breeds of dogs are banned (including the Queen's Corgies). People who support this ban are basically giving a green light to the Government to make this hell hole province completely dog free. Do you all really hate dogs that much? Have you ever considered that the reason that you hear only about Pit Bull Attacks is because THAT is what the Hot Topic is right now and that is what the Media reports on? Will you go right ahead and support any ban on any breed as long as it's "HOT NEWS"? Has anyone considered that the Government ignored EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL EXPERT and went ahead with this band-aid reactionary law?
Don't be complaining when they ban your beloved Golden Retreiver or whatever dog might be next on the list. And there is already a list of NUMEROUS other breeds to be banned.

What the hell is a Pit Bull Anyway?

Additionally...
Guy who posted who has the girlfriend with the Boxer....
She better muzzle her dog as the ban covers any dog with characterisitcs that are similar to the Pit Bull....

and Michael Bryant has even pointed to a picture of a boxer when asked for an example of "similar"

Wasn't that in the news? Where a reporter comes up to 1 MP and ask's if he knows anything about pitbulls & rottweilers? Obviously, he didn't know. That's the kind of politics Canada is beign runned by. What do these people actually know? Do they even know what politics are? If suppose ably you are a politican, you have excellent communication skills, excellent scores from past schools and YET you can't recognize a single breed of dog's?
I will leave this country if I can't have a dog in my own house.

People in canada say they want the truth. But telling the truth gets your opponant elected. All people here want are lies and promises and when the promises are broken people say "oh well".

This is nothing compared to what the goverment is doing to Marc Emery. They let the US government come into CANADA and arrest Marc on Canadian soil and is now awaiting extradition hearings to be extradited to the US where he faces charges that could get him life in prison. Some of you might know the situation...if not...do some research
