Hey, as someone who likes DJing as a hobby (but isn't very good ), what sort of headphones does everyone recommend I buy? Right now I have a $30 pair.... they're decent, but I like my friends' $80 koss one's alot more, it's easier to beatmatch with them... about how much should I expect to spend on a good pair?

Thumbs up

I myself have a SONY MDR-V500DJ, which is the smaller brother of the one Tiësto normally uses... It's sound quality is awesome, and I think it's about 80 Euro... ehm, that's about 70 to 75 dollar, if I'm not mistaken...

grtz, MenTall

If you're really serious about buying a good pair you can use when performing at a club/rave get one of the following:

Sennheiser HD 25 or HD 25 SP (about $200 / $120 respectively)
Those are my favourite headphones, really amazing sound and comfortable too ... awesome attenuation of background noise. Replacable parts in case something busts. Somewhat hard to find in some areas.

Technics RP-DJ 1200 (about $100 - 120)
What can I say, swiveling earpieces, very loud, very little outside noise bleed-through.

Sony MDR V700DJ (about $120)
Had the pleasure of using these babies once and I'm really impressed. Everything you would want in a headphone, except they're a little heavy.

Pioneer SE-DJ5000 (about $100)
Never used these but I've heard they're quite similar to the Technics headphones.

A rule when buying headphones is to try them before you buy if possible ... one pair of cans might work amazing for one person but somebody else might find them totally weird to use ...

peace

Since you live in Winnipeg, I don't know if you guys have any vinyl shops there, or stores that sell DJ gear ... check at places that sell musician gear ... or you might want to try with mailorder / online stores, but most of them are in US so consider the shipping too, although the headphones shouldn't be too expensive to ship.
go to www.dj-links.com - there is a huge list of DJ gear shops.

peace

Check out www.htfr.com, it's an online DJ superstore that ships all over the world.
