if all you are doing is gonna be running in 2 channel audio (to record sets) and 2 ch out (to monitors) yes this is DEFINITLY overkill.
for remixing and producing, dont worry too much about pre-amps. internal mic pres dont sound real great. youd wanna get a nice tube pre anyways. and most of the time you arent running that many inputs and outputs.
dont get me wrong, focusrite make very very nice equipment. i love their pre-amps, and this is a great interface, but you could easily get away with a firewire solo from m-audio. now if you are going firewire for its higher bandiwdth and therefore lower latency, id go this route:
E-MU PCMCIA interface
i usually dont like E-MU products since they are made by creative and think you get better sound from M-Audio, Lexicon, Pre-sonus, or Focusrite, however, this little thing looks bad-ass.
it has an on-board DSP, 192khz, and ZERO latency monitoring
