I wonder why that is the perception.

On a price-point/car-class basis, North American vehicles are nearly the same as foreign cars with respect to build quality.

It mostly applies to economy cars imo.
I think it boils down to longevity.

I'm by no stretch of ANY imagination a car buff, but its pretty obvious that the avg N.American economy car is hurting by 200 000 kms.
Whereas as a German or Japanese economy car EASLIY clears 300 000 or more...

the CAW strikes again! Sorry to say it folks but if not for the outragous wages autoworkers are paid these lay-offs would not be necessary. Let's all thank the unions for raping industry and making it unprofitable to maintain plants here.

Unfortunatly it goes beyond just initial quaility.

The american themes have always been:
1) they will give you lots of features, even if they don't all work right and break down.
2) When the car breaks down, repairing will be cheap and easy.

The Japaneese always followed different rules:
1) They won't give you every feature under the sun, but things will work well.
2) If something breaks down, which is not often, it may be a little more expensive to fix, but it will happen less often.

The public got tired of the US bullshit. The US companies just took their segment of the market for granted, and believed that they would always have loyal consumers based on the fact that they are domestic.

unfortunatly this bad for Ontario as a whole. When this many jobs are taken away from any economy, everybody feels the pinch. THere is just less money as a whole to spend. Sales every where suffer.
