British cops probe Kate Moss cocaine-taking
Associated Press

LONDON — Police are investigating allegations that model Kate Moss has recently used cocaine, Metropolitan Police said Wednesday.

Any decision about charges, London's police chief said, should take account of the impact of the case on impressionable young people.

Confirmation of the investigation came a day after H&M, Europe's largest fashion retailer, dropped the 31-year-old model from an upcoming ad campaign.

Pictures published in the Daily Mirror appeared to show her snorting cocaine.

Sir Ian Blair, the commissioner of Metropolitan Police, told reporters that he had been involved in the decision to investigate Moss.

He said he didn't wish to comment directly on the case, but said: "We have to look at the impact of this kind of behavior on impressionable young people and if there is evidence something should be done about it.

"I can remember being asked a question about a previous individual who was given a caution. I think that was a wrong decision."

London's police generally investigate drug dealers rather than users, but that policy is "adaptable to the impact of events," Blair said.

NOW CHANEL AND BURBERRY DUMP KATE MOSS
By Steve Purcell

SHAMED model Kate Moss (left) was today dropped by two more fashion labels over her cocaine abuse.

As Britain's top policeman revealed he had personally ordered an investigation into her drug use, high-class fashion house Chanel said it would not be renewing Moss's contract, which expires next month.

Later, fashion house Burberry announced that it, too, was to end its association with the supermodel.

Moss was axed by clothes store H&M yesterday.

The High Street giant pulled the plug on the 31-year-old's lucrative contract as the face of its Stella McCartney collection - despite pleas from the designer.

Kate feared other big fashion house names would follow suit by giving her the boot over the Mirror's revelations that she snorted five lines of cocaine in 40 minutes with lover Pete Doherty at a recording studio. And today that happened.

Burberry said a campaign scheduled for autumn had been cancelled by mutual consent in the wake of drug allegations and that it was "saddened by her current circumstances" and wished Moss well.

A spokeswoman for Chanel said: "The company has no plans to work with Kate Moss on advertising campaigns in the near future."

H&M's decision represents a major U-turn by the company who initially decided to merely condemn the star but carry on using her image in a campaign due to be launched on November 10.

The Swedish-based firm said it acted after an outcry from its teenage customers and their horrified parents.

It added: "H&M will cancel the planned advertising campaign with model Kate Moss. H&M is strongly against drugs and for many years has supported drug preventing organisation Mentor Foundation.

"After having evaluated the situation, we decided that a campaign with Kate Moss is inconsistent with our clear dissociation of drugs."

H&M spokeswoman Annacarin Bjorne said of the company's change of heart: "We needed the weekend to evaluate the situation and make a well-reasoned decision. She told us after this came to our knowledge she was extremely regretful.''

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said today the decision over whether or not to charge Moss would take into account her effect on "impressionable young people".

The Mirror today reveals how Croydon-born Kate snorted cocaine in front of teenagers in Ibiza last month.

A friend of the model said: "She was out of her head on it and didn't blink an eyelid taking lines in front of the kids.

"There was a big bash at Jade Jagger's house and she was holding court and chopping out up to six lines of coke for her friends at breakfast.

"She was in a bad way during the whole holiday. She would put on expensive designer dresses in front of everyone before deciding she didn't like them and ripping them off like a five-year-old.

"Up close, her cover-looks were nowhere to be seen. She looked tired and haggard and her skin was blotchy.

"At one point she jumped up and down when high on cocaine and sang, 'My mum works in McDonald's'."

Kate has been struggling to decide the best way to show remorse for her antics.

She is agonising over whether to dump crackhead singer Doherty, who she admitted she adores, or go into rehab.

If she does neither, she knows she could lose her entire modelling career and unrestricted access to two-year-old daughter Lila Grace.

Kate is prepared to go back into rehab as a last resort and now H&M has ditched her, friends believe she will seek professional help.

Her ex-partner Jefferson Hack, Lila Grace's dad, is already seeking legal advice over what to do next.

AS IF they will be able to prosecute her

what a waste of police resources...Kate is a *fucking idiot* for acknowledging and admitting the incident too. I'd respect her more if she just said "my private life is none of your fucking business" to the press.

Boisclair feels heat on drugs

Rattled PQ leadership candidate lashes out at media: 'I am under a great deal of stress'

By RHÉAL SÉGUIN

Wednesday, September 21, 2005 Posted at 4:11 AM EDT

QUEBEC — The Parti Québécois leadership race veered into a public frenzy yesterday over how long the campaign's front-runner used cocaine and whether he will be forced to drop out.

This week, leading candidate André Boisclair admitted he used cocaine when he was a PQ cabinet minister in the late 1990s. One of his former cabinet colleagues, François Gendron, suggested yesterday that Mr. Boisclair's cocaine use might have stretched over a long period of time.

"I can tell you frankly that I was aware of the rumours. They had been circulating for a long time," said Mr. Gendron, the longest-sitting member of the National Assembly.

"If there are things left to clean up it will be up to him to do it and I hope he cleans them up."

Mr. Boisclair refused to say how long he used cocaine and at what point he stopped taking the illegal drug. Mr. Gendron said that when rumours persisted in cabinet, authorities whom he did not identify took matters in hand.

"Most of the [cabinet] colleagues knew about the rumours. It was up to authorities to manage the situation. I am aware that some people in authority tried to do just that, and according to my information, they probably succeeded since he doesn't take any more drugs," Mr. Gendron said.

Mr. Boisclair was never charged and no police investigation has come to light.

The darling of the PQ establishment appeared frantic yesterday and came close to breaking under pressure from reporters demanding explanations about his cocaine use.

"I want to tell you that I will stay in the race. . . . I told you I was in this race in full possession of all my faculties," Mr. Boisclair said yesterday. But then he suddenly lashed out at reporters after walking into a wall of microphones and tape recorders. He accused journalists of blocking his way to a hall packed with college students, where he was scheduled to appear.

"I am under a great deal of stress. I don't need this type of physical aggression on me on your part," he said. "Please, this type of behaviour, I'm asking you to respect the integrity of my person."

The other contenders refused to judge Mr. Boisclair on his past behaviour, but most said his use of cocaine has poisoned the race and could have a negative impact on voters.

"I have children, and the last thing I want to do is trivialize the use of cocaine," leadership hopeful Richard Legendre said yesterday.

"André has given explanations. I think he was transparent and that's good. Now let's move on and it will be up to the party members to decide."

Some candidates are uncomfortable that the front-runner has admitted to what they consider a criminal act, but they refused to question Mr. Boisclair's decision to stay in the race.

"In our legal system, a person is innocent until proven guilty and I am not in a position to condemn Mr. Boisclair's action. That would be up to a court to decide," said candidate Jean-Claude Saint-André, who has accused Mr. Boisclair of being a lightweight.

"I just want him to add substance to important questions we're asking him."

Mr. Boisclair has the support of a dozen PQ MNAs and 15 Bloc Québécois MPs. Bloc justice critic Richard Marceau said that despite admitting to having committed a crime, Mr. Boisclair should stay in the race.

Mr. Boisclair held a special meeting Sunday with his supporters in the PQ and Bloc caucuses to discuss his future, knowing the cocaine issue was about to erupt in full public view.

"We all told him that we are behind him and that he shouldn't quit," Mr. Marceau said yesterday. "Everyone there told him to stay."

The first all-candidates meeting is being held in Sherbrooke tonight and will be the first opportunity for candidates to gauge the rank-and-file members' reaction to the cocaine uproar.

Party members are to cast their votes by telephone between Nov. 13 and Nov. 15. The winner will be announced on the final day of the vote.
