Static build-up

I got my first turntable on Thursday and about 9 vinyls...I'm loving it so far. However, ever since I started using a slipmat (received it the next day), I have noticed a substantial amount of static electricity when I pick up a vinyl thats been playing to put it away. Is this a grounding problem with the turntable, or a problem with the vinyls?

The turntable is an SL-1200MK2, and I have a regular red felt slipmat.

in my experiance....itll just go away.

i dont know the scientific reason why, but to me...when i first got some vinyl, and my tables...i could easily give the vinyl, or the turntable itself a static shock....but after a short time...it just seems so go away.

That's interesting. Now that I think about it, I just played with it a little bit and it seemed to be a lot better than it was yesterday -- I hardly got any static at all, while yesterday I got a shock from every vinyl.

O.k. bro...I have the same slipmats...blue, they attract so much dust and static it's incredible. But..

I was playing an outdoor party under a tent, all of the sudden everytime I touched the turntable it shocked the hell out of me!!! When I would cue it I was getting shocked. So the hair on my arms and head began to stand up...3 seconds later the tent got struck with lighting. Rain began to pour in and I dove on top of my tables so they wouldn't get wet. They had to pick up the table with me on it and move it out of the way of the pouring rain. I still have the record I was playing...Paul van Dyk - Out there. It has the biggest freaking gash right down the middle. But honestly I would've rather fucked up a 10 dollar record than my 1000 dollar turntables

damn thats crazy. the lightning was probably due to the charge coming from under ground rather than the static electricity due to the tables though... as charge builds up in the sky, an opposite charge builds up in the ground as deep as the sky is tall.... and that creates a potential which causes lightning when the charge in the ground finds a way to the surface... in this case it was the tent that was probably nailed to the ground...

wait... i dont think you were saying that the static cuased the lightning but.... owell. now you have more info than you asked for and im gonna post this anyway becuase im out of it : \

im glad you and your tables were ok though : )

Cool

i got shocked off static on a sunny day after i dusted my dex once was quite pleasurable

seriously tho, static aint a real problem, it's only bad on any surface when its high pressure and sunny, particularly when there is friction, like dusting, apart from that u'll live
