I think the saying stems from the fact that when you go to an event or a concert, you expect to *see* the performer put on a good show. Putting on a good show, however, consists of a lot of things - the music, the sound, how interesting they are, etc etc.
I usually either say:
"Going to [name]"
"Going to see [name] spin"
[Going to see [name]" when I'm too lazy to say one extra word.
None of these really mean that I'm going just to *see* the DJ, but I would like to see them actually do their thing, and not be hidden away somewhere. Adds to the atmosphere imo.
P.S. While we're on the issue of seeing DJs, I gotta say I do not understand the girls who say Tiesto's hot. He's not good looking by a long shot (I'm saying this in the least homo way possible). And PVD looks like a whiny nerd kid.
P.S.S. I'm a newbie compared to you jay, so I have no idea what the people were saying back in the good ol days.
