I'm more of a fan of OGG format... better sounds quality, broader frequencies, smaller filesize... it's a win-win situation. The only downside is that CD decks generally just use MP3 or CDA format.
If you're just looking to put them on your computer or something for streaming to a mixer or listening, though, you should give it a shot. Check for the OGG Vorbis encoder for WinAmp 5.

SSL does support Ogg as well as MP3.
From the 1.4 manual-
Supported file types:
Scratch LIVE supports fixed and variable bit rate .MP3, Ogg
Vorbis, .AIFF, and .WAV file types
