No search?? This should save noobs some time..

Considering the Search function is down for a while.. i guess we are going to get a flood of the commonly asked questions again.. so I thought I would list them here and get it all out of the way in one go.

1) I've downloaded the Virus Powercore VST on Bittorrent.. how can i get it to work with Ejay?

2) OMGz!! HARDSYTLE RAWKS!! how do u do dat bass????

3) can I have a serial number for Cubase SX3?

4) whats the name of the program that pulls all the little parts of a track apart like the vocals and stuff and allows you to re-rearange it?

5) I just finshed my first song in fruityloops after producing for a month.. my mum thinks it rocks.. what labels should i send it too?

6) how can I make a supersaw on my "Insert Free Synth here"

7) i've been using (Fruityloops and Reason and I've decided its not my lack of skill but the programs thats stopping me from being a pro producer... whats the most Pro software I get that will make me sound good.

8) Can anyone Email me a invite for Audionews/Audiofarm/Oinks/ ect.. ect..

9) I wanna make trance like my favourite producer "Insert name here" is there a VST plug in that i can hit like 1 or 2 buttons and make tracks that are as good as theirs?

10) I got some little creative speakers when I bought my computer from the local department store.. they sound ok when i play doom.. they will be fine for near field monitoring right?

*NEW*

11) So I just take the waves commpressor and put in on the master channel and thats mastering right?

12) Can you please send me the pPerfect EQ preset that will work every single time for my (Bass/Lead/Drums) <- Pick one

13) ok.. you guys said if I wanted my VST's to make sounds I needed Midi.. I went down to the computer store and told the guy I needed a midi and he gave me a computer case WTF?

Please feel free to answer any of the above questions now..

Very amusing, but I think we really do need a stickied FAQ/rules and also to remove all the other stickies (when they take up half the page, people ignore them).

A while back, before Toronto had its own events forum, we had an event "master list" thread. People could post replies, but every now and then a mod would consolidate all those replies into the original post and delete the replies, so there was ONE post in ONE thread with ALL the information. I'm not sure how much work that was for the moderators, but personally I think it's the ideal solution to the problem here. Have one thread with all the most frequently asked questions and very brief answers, possibly with links to other threads and/or a reference to the poster who donated that link or advice (to give them credit).

I'm not suggesting that "someone other than me" should do this either - I'd be happy to take on the responsibility myself if it were possible to set up one thread here that could be edited an unlimited number of times and be able to clear out the replies.

Maybe nobody will go for that idea. I hope someone will. Anyway, someone ought to actually answer these questions, so I'll do the honours:

--------------------

--- How do I rip a [vocal / drumloop / other element] from a track? ---
You don't. You can't. Even if you could, it would be infringing on the author's copyright.

--- Where can I find a serial/crack for [some program?] ---
Not here. Please take your business elsewhere.

--- Where can I find the acapella in [some track]? ---
Somewhere else. Go away.

--- Can anyone hook me up with [some software] or [some site that gives away commercial software for free]? ---
No. Don't ask.

--- What sound card should I buy? ---
Read Tweak's Comments and then use the search function. Zzounds and many other online retailers will have tons of reviews for popular products. Please, please, do not make a new thread asking this question unless you have exhausted all other possibilities.

--- What speakers/headphones should I buy? ---
Almost the same answer as above, but even worse to ask. When it comes to speakers/monitors, opinions are like asses (everybody has one). Here's some basic advice:
- If you're not sure whether or not you need expensive studio monitors, you don't. The only time you should even consider these is if you notice that a track sounds wonderful on your "production" speakers but gritty and crappy on other speakers.
- Read LOTS of reviews - don't take any one person's word for it.
- Visit a retailer if possible and actually LISTEN to the speakers/headphones; listen in particular for the ones which seem to sound the worst and thinnest, because they are often the most "honest", and if you can make your track sound good on those, they will sound good on all the others.

--- I'm a total beginner. Where do I start? ---
Here are some tutorials:
Tutorials thread
Tweak's Home Studio Guide
Computer Music tutorials
(we can add more to this list)

--- How do I make good drums/kicks? ---
The Perfect Kick thread
Tweak's thoughts on drum tracks
Mixing Drums (The Whippin' Post)
(surely some of you out there have more to add)

--- How do I make [prog / trance / D'n'B / electro / etc. ] sounds? ---
The same way you make any other sounds. Here are some sound design tutorials:
Exploration of sound thread
The SuperSaw thread
Samplecraze tutorials (go to the "synthesis" links)
Noise Sculpture
CM Guide to FM Synthesis
(again, we can add more)

--- I'm not a beginner, but my tracks don't sound good. What buttons can I push to make better ones? ---
Try this one:

--- How do I EQ my sounds? ---
Tweak's EQ Tutorial
CM Guide to EQ
Samplecraze: Conquering EQ

--- How do I compress my sounds/tracks? ---
CM Compression Guide
CM Dynamics Guide
Tweak: All About Compressors
PcMus Tips on compression
Compressors (The Whippin' Post)[/URL]

--- How do I master a track? ---
Exploration of Mastering thread
CM Mastering for beginners
Tweak's guide to mastering in the home studio

--- How do I compose good music? ---
Composition is an art form and can't be learned adequately from a couple of cookbook guides. However, you can start off by learning music theory:
ThinkQuest Music Theory
CM Music Theory 1
CM Music Theory 2
CM Music Theory 3]
Ricci Adam's Music Theory
To learn about chords, look at:
Piano room
(I know there are more chord sites, but I forgot to bookmark them)

--- How do I remix a track? ---
This is an art just like composition. Here's some information that might be helpful:
CM Guide to Remixing
If you have an acapella: Tweak's guide to processing vocals
Samplecraze: Chopping Samples

--- How does this track sound? ---
--- Help me fix this track? ---
--- Anyone want to remix this track? ---

Post it in the Music Producers Forum and people will be happy to comment. Your odds of getting useful advice if you post your track in there are proportional to your personal contribution to that forum. Your odds of getting useful advice if you post it in here are near zero.

--- What labels/DJs should I send my track to? ---
We don't know and we don't care. You might have more luck asking this in the Music Producers Promotion forum, but I doubt it. Here's some info on HOW to prepare your demo:
Sending out a demo for the first time
