Merkel 'to be German chancellor'
Angela Merkel's party won a narrow victory in last month's poll
Germany's Social Democrats have agreed that conservative Christian Democrat (CDU) leader Angela Merkel will become chancellor, German media report.
The agreement was reported by the German news agency DPA and ZDF television, with no further details.
The question of who would lead a new government has dogged talks between the main parties since they began.
Both Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Mrs Merkel laid claim to the post after a tight election on 18 September.
Further coalition talks between the two parties are being held Monday to resolve the post-election political deadlock.
The two parties have held three rounds of what they called exploratory talks.
Even if agreement has been reached, it will only be the start of a lengthy and more detailed negotiation on the small print of future government policy, the BBC's Ray Furlong reports.
It all suggests just how difficult it might be for a grand coalition of the conservatives and Social Democrats to govern Germany if it is indeed formed as anticipated.
Good news, even tho Germany still has a tough road ahead of it...

weakened politicans can't do much. doesn't matter who would win. there is not going to be a coalition government.

I have my doubts too. It will probably be, but only for a while, the two parties are so different I doubt they could manage to do something together....
I still have some hope tho... But perhaps a reelection is better, where we can get a clear majority (hopefully). Although I guess it's better to have it like this than to have only SDP

How come no one ever points out when I was right]
But yea, looks like they managed to get some semblence of a coalition formed. How long it will last is another. But the major point is it looks completely powerless. This coalition will fall as soon as the first hard decision needs to be made.
The German people have elected to have no government. Let anarchy rein.

Hahaha in Germany of all places!
I hope Germany's "sluggish" economy, (as some experts put it) picks up the pace!
I also would like to compliment the German people on not losing control, proves they have lots of determination and patience!
I know if a result like this occured in a provincial election here in Quebec... There'd be some harsh finger pointing and even harsher accusations, even if the people did manage to vote almost perfectly evenly!
There would certainly not be a reasonable solution this quickly.
