[progressive trance] Massive bass and creepy pads

I've never really done anything this progressive before (and it's still quite melodic), but I think it's pretty nice. I essentially built this thing around the pads and bassline with some more-or-less unusual percussion.

I think the first few minutes sound pretty massive.

pretty good trance track... kinda hoping it would be dark and twisted (creepy strings??)

too melodic to be creepy... try to be one thing but end up being another i like it very much.. and would like to hear it when its properly mastered & all that sort of stuff...

btw... bpm is good for now...

Hi There... I listened to this track from your post on the Toronto / Ontario forums and im pretty damn impressed. Great prog trance you got here. The kick drum sounds a bit muffled to me, but not a big problem. Maybe reduce the reverb, or shorten the sample length. Rest of the percussion is fine. Maybe the use of compression could help. I find the mid bass seems a bit too distracting. Might need some reduction in frequencies around 4k, as well as some stereo reduction to keep it in background to keep the focus on the great melodies you have. I like how the song progresses, nice buildup.. Main synth could be a bit pluckier instead of as flowey sounding. Could use a tad of reverb instead of the release you have. Just some suggestions . Otherwise... top tune here for prog.

Tim

* listening *

pretty low end kick and clap u got there, and the hi hats sounds 22 khz, its not bad, just noticed, the the loop u bring in 0:59 comes a bit to loud (lower the volume a bit ) now u bring in the kick and string, sounds pretty good, but gets repetive fast, u bring in some really nice synth after that sounds great, the percussions in the background are great as well.. u bring in a lead there, pretty linear (which i like ) but again u bring in that HIGH VOLUME loop (which kinda ruins a bit)

3:55 the track slows down to a break, nice plucky melody, drums are added and it sound nice and chill.. seems like u added another layer of lead there, gets a bit too to loud, drowns the percussions a bit.. the end is near, again.. u need to even out the percussions a bit.. and maybe add some effects to the outro..

my thoughts, nice track..

7/10

Thanks for the comments... yea the mastering is crap right now but I haven't even started working on it yet. I'll try some different things with the main synth (which is just a couple of samples right now). I agree that it's definitely too loud...

Should I add some effects? Some subtle whooshes at the ends of phrases and the like?

I think the problem with the kick is that it's superimposed over the heavy deep bass and there might be some weird effects due to the interference. Shortening the sample will probably help.

If I get a chance to fix things up this weekend, I'll upload a new version...

Thanks for the comments!

Updated!

- Added some fx
- Added a couple more layers of melody
- Added a new counter-melody to the climax.
- Added some phasers on the main synth
- Lots of mastering changes
- Very subtle percussion changes
- Improved sound overall
- NOW 192 kbps!!!

Let me know if it's any better!

~ Elyot

i barerly can hear the kcik, but still i am a kick lover .
i think the bass is to "nice" to! it should be harder to give more "push". the lead is great with the background synths and all. loop is too high. fx is pretty darn good .

i dont think "climax" has any real push? this may be a slower tune but i do think that the climax has to give people a "feeling".

just my thoughts though. everyone might not agree.

Yea I still need to do a bit more EQing on some parts of this... I'm still not very good at mastering, but things are coming along.

Which loop do you think is too high? The one that comes in at 3:00? Again, some EQing will fix things. The other synths are gonna get a bit of an EQ-job too.

Maybe I'll add some more effects from the 5:30 to 5:40 mark to make the climax drop a bit more massive.

As for the bass, it's not changing. I really built the whole track around that bassline...

Thanks a lot for your comments though.

Quite a nice uplifting proggy track you have here. Something about it seems familiar... like a track I heard a long time ago which stuck in my head. I guess this is a good quality to have in a trance tune though!

On one had I feel the fx are too obvious and simple, but on the other I think this is part of the tracks charm. It certainly has an innocent feel to it and I think mashing up the fx more could kinda ruin this.

Mastering could be a bit better as it all feels a tad flat. Some more panning/spread on the lead could help. Also the percussion doesnt feel very separated. I think the clap and hats could occupy some higher bands.

Updated again. The mastering is considerably better now. The kick is stronger, the melodies have been EQed a bit, and hopefully things sound a little better and cleaner.

Does anyone have any suggestions for names?
