Mr. Barcode - Designated Robot

Mr_Barcode Designated Robot

Mr_Barcode wants to destroy the humans…or so we hear. Apparently, the infectious grooves of his upcoming Gourmet long player have hidden messages in them that will harbor the end of humanity. There’s more Mr_Barcode would have you believe, including that his best friend is a dead calculator named George…ahem…the Calculator. Also, he’s the sworn enemy of Canadian west coast house stalwart Jay Tripwire. But the truth is that the two are one and the same. And the real effect of his album isn’t human devastation but complete dance floor mayhem.

Designated Robot will be released as three collectible EP’s this fall. At a time when many producers are minimalising themselves right into the emperor’s new clothes our Mr_Barcode has created the most soul satisfying collection of analog squelches and acid riffs this side of 1988. The brilliant ten track LP features mostly solid warehouse music along with some left of center weirdisms. The opener, Bronco Billy’s Acid Party, sums up perfectly what this project is about. Tweaked lo-fi drums and a filthy sub-bass underpin who we assume is Bronco Billy breathing heavily and rambling about tripping on acid. On the flip, Cybertron and We Can Talk Telectro are both equal parts eighties electro and gritty raver tech-house. There are warm bass lines everywhere, funky percussion, organic drums and even layered melodies. Maybe Barcode’s not as evil as he lets on…. Part two of the project proves different. It’s all about robot domination, stalkers and acid belches as Barcode’s barrage of analog filth continues. There’s even an acappella on hand for those private moments. The final installment of the trilogy is the most surgically produced. Girl from the Stars must be about robot love. It’s hard for human ears to understand what the digital girl in the track is saying but surely its music to Barcode as he’s written thick warm pads and a bubbling Moog bass to go along with her. Schizophrenic is probably where Barcode comes closest to making good on his prediction of dark devastation; the beats are breaky, the bass subterranean and there’s a constant buzz of mad gibberish stammering in the back about doom and gloom.

Don’t forget who’s behind this Barcode persona! Jay Tripwire has put out over sixty releases with more than a hundred thousand records sold on some of the most seminal labels out there. His music has been on compilation CD's by artists such as Slam, Nick Warren & Danny Howells, Chris Fortier, George Morel, Tyler Stadius, Onionz & Joeski, and charted by everyone from John Digweed to Terry Francis to Fred Everything. This man’s madness has a vast range of appeal, crossing boundaries between house, techno and electro even pulling progressive and trance DJ's. By his own admission this Barcode stuff comes from when, “He takes over me and unleashes his hatred for all things organic via his robot-infused madness.” Who knows, maybe this is will spell doom for humanity in the end…might as well shake your ass one last time to acid house!
