Ok for those that actually care, i am trying to come up with a system of organizing music that would be best for navigation purposes...I want it to be as simple as possible and have as less confusion as possible. I want the system to have rules and have even developed my own:
Artist - Song Title (Sub Title) [Mix] (Feat. Artist) {Song Origin}
(Plug in the information needed for each song)
Artist - As written by Artist or All Words Capitalized (Trying to look for a Universal way of organizing the Artist
Words to be Capitalized in Song Title:
All Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adverbs and Adjectives
First and Last Words
Conjunctions or Prepositions of five letters or more
Words Before and After a comma [Ex. Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket]
Words Kept Lower Case:
Articles: (There are only 3 in the English Language)
A
The
An
Prepositions: (4 Letters or Fewer)
On
As
At
By
In
Of
To
Up
Re
Off
For
Out
Via
Mid
Into
Onto
Like
Near
With
Till
Past
Over
Down
From
Upon
These are all the prepositions 4 Letter words and below in the English Dictionary
The prepositions I think most appropriate for lower casing are:
On
As
At
By
In
Of
To
Up
Re
For
From
If i should add any or take any out please post your ideas...give as many suggestions as possible
Conjunctions: (Four Letters or Fewer)[Remember FANBOYS]
For
And
Nor
But
Or
Yet
So
(Sub Title) - Part of the Song Title [Ex. Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)
{Song Origin} - Where the dong originated from [Ex. James Horner - My Heart Will Go On {From Titanic}]
(Feat. Artist) - Artist part of the Original Artists Song
Artists with The at the beginning of their name are to drop it [Ex. The Red Hot Chili Peppers - Red Hot Chili Peppers]
Number - Always spelled out
& - Use only for Artist and [Mix] to combine two single artists into one, or if their names are spelled with the symbol attached to it [Ex1. Blank & Jones] [Ex2. Above & Beyond]
! - Use only if the Song Title has one
Vs. - Use when two Artists are battling each other
I Need All the Help I can Get so please tell me what i need to fix, change, or leave the same....thank you!
I Put my Music into 11 Genres (For my Comfort) and 1 Sub-Genre:
Electronic Dance Music
- Live Sets [Sub Genre]
Rock
Pop
Rap and R & B
Country
Classical
Christian
Oldies
Reggae [Can also be labeled World/International/Ethnic]
Celtic [Can also be labeled World/International/Ethnic]
Dance
Japanese [Can also be labeled World/International/Ethnic]
If you group the 3 International Genres that leaves you with 8 Genres
I also have extra Genres:
Disney
Dance Dance Revolution
Video Game Music
Instrumentals
Movies
and then 4 Additional Folders:
Organized [Files organized but not put into a genre folder]
Organize This [Files not organized and not stuck in a genre folder]
I.D. [Files unable to be identified]
Important Shit [Non-Music/Movie files that have importance]
**Genres are put into broad categories to prevent confusion. If one knows the broad category of music they are listening to, they will be able to find it easier than finding the Sub-Genre [Ex1. Techno or Trance could be put into Electronic Dance Music] [Ex2. Punk Rock or Alternative Rock could be put into Rock]**
For those of you who thinks this is a waste of time and completely think i have no life, i want you to know that im just obsessive compulsive and i HATE not being able to find songs i want quick and easy!
FOR ANYONE THAT CAN HELP ME COME UP WITH A LIVE SET SYSTEM PLEASE EITHER P.M. ME OR JUST POST WHAT YOU THINK ON THIS THREAD! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I do not have a lot of singles, but I mainly collect live sets. The way i always name them is:
Artist - Year Month Day - Venue, City, Country
Example:
Paul Oakenfold - 1999 07 25 - Live at Space, Ibiza.mp3
Works really well for me, cause this way everything is automatically sorted by artist, and for all arists, sorted by date. Its perfect.

What I will do is burn my entire collection to cd, write a number on the cd, and the date that I burned it on. I then remove the files from my disk and fill it up with new music, and repeat the process. I have a giant spreadsheet that I can search through by artist or title, and it will give me the number of the cd that the file can be found on. I pretty much leave the filenames alone and keep them the way I get them.
I have a 60 slot cd changer that all the discs go in that I put on shuffle and leave playing pretty much whenever I am in the house. If I hear a song I like but dont remember the name I just pull the disc out and stick it in my computer, sometimes the cd player has trouble displaying the titles and stuff.

it depends on what you mean...you cant have the format i have when organizing music on an ipod but the file name is suppose to be in the format.
follow the same format on an ipod just drop the artist and the - and put the artist under its catergory
For Example:
Deepsky - Talk Like A Stranger [Markus Schulz ColdHarbour Remix] (Feat. Jes Brieden)
That is in the exact format it is suppose to be...when organizing it on an ipod, it should look like this:
Talk Like A Stranger [Markus Schulz ColdHarbour Remix] (Feat. Jes Brieden) - This should go under Song Name or what ever the category under an ipod is and the artist under artist

i'm obsessive-complusive when it comes to sorting my 10,000 mp3s. the standard seems to be 'artist ft artist - album - title (mix).mp3' or for sets 'artist - event location date.mp3' for ipod the only important thing for me is to keep the id3 genres consistant. i lump everything edm into house or trance for playlist simplicity.

i have one question about the "Standard" if you have lets say Firewall Feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw - Album - Sincere 2005 (Lange Mix)
and then:
Firewall - Album - Reflections (Original Mix)
you will now have two different artists at this point...one with just Firewall and then one with Firewall Feat. Kirsty Hawkshaw ....wouldnt it be easier to get rid of the Album and put the Featured Artist at the end like so:
Now you have ONE Artist and it makes things much more simpler and much more easier to navigate.
Try this method:
Artist - Song Title (Sub Title) {Song Origin} [Mix] (Feat. Artist)
Not every category is used so you just plug into the categories needed
For Album names you should just put it in the Album catergory of the software you are using such as ITunes or Windows Media Player
Im still developing a system for live sets but my focus right now is to develop a system that makes everything else obsolete...the "perfect" system....and im looking for people to help me out
As for Genres Why Have House and Trance and Psy Trance, Techno Etc. when you can just have a broadened genre of Just EDM...the same with Rock...why have Soft or Alternative? As long as you have rock and you know what type of song it is the Genre can stay broadened for a more simpler system and an easier way for nagivation

I organize like this (names are folders and the - are the levels):

Don't worry I'm also obsessive compulsive
Let's say you have 3 different genres of music: RnB, Free Style, and House:Techno:Trance
The way I label is by assigning a folder to each MAJOR genre of music without going overboard on the specifics. As you know there are many forms of Rnb such as RnB Funk, Disco RnB, etc. Just have one general folder and call it "RnB" and dump everything in there. The same goes with House, Techno, and Trance. Assign a folder called "Electronic Dance Music" and put everything in there. Repeat previous steps for Freestyle.
OPTION #1
.........
I. "Rnb" folder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
II. "Electronic Dance Music" folder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
III."Free Style" folder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
OPTION #2
.........
I.
II. "Electronic Dance Music" folder
A)House (all types) subfolder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
B)Techno (all types) subfolder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
C)Trance (all types) subfolder
1. Artist - Song Title
2. Artist - Song Title
III.
Hope that helps!!!!

I like your Option 1 (which is the way i do things) but Option 2 just spreads things out to much...as long as you know one song is in a certain type of genre, things such be easy to find if folders are more of a broadened category
