is there much point in giving people bad feedback on mixes?? well maybe not bad just you know theres loads of mixes out there that are instantly forgettable, when the mixing is pretty tight, but the tunes are just uninspired. anytime ive seen anyone give bad feedback, they get a hard time for it on forums...yet we dont think twice to get stuck into the likes of sasha etc. i mean what is the point in feedback if you can only give good feedback, or tell lies to fit in with the crowd? i dunno im listeing to a mix right now that has good some rave reviews and its pretty bog standard to me.

Your opinion and likes differ from others. A good mix to someone might be tight mixing with a ok track selection, but to someone else it may be a awesome tracklisting and not know what the hell a trainwreck is.

It is all personal preference my friend.

i personally would like any feed back, bad or good. I think the thing is you have to be able to give some justification for not liking it, just saying its shit isnt gonna help anyone and youre probably gonna piss people off.

But anyone who cant take a bit of constructive crticism is a fool.

Whenever i comment on somebodys mix i look at it subkectively.

I might not like their music so i like at slightly more objective factors such as

Track to track flow
overall flow
energy levels
mixing ability.

I like to judge actual technical ability like beatmatching last because chances are, the guy alreay knows the mistakes, of course ill mention them, but for a dj looking to improve, its too obvious.

he knows the mix from track 7 - track 8 fucked up. ok. but there are a bunch of other things he/she probably needs help on.


I for one agree with you on the forgetability of a lot of demos, when i make a demo i try and make is special. i think theres too many younger djs like us just putting new new new tunes. not really thinking about the big picture..


I dont review many mixes.. the ones i do review i write maaaaasssively long reviews for.

When I write a review, I'll take the time to write something that hopefully can be used to make the person a better DJ. Everything is from my perspective/opinion, so keep in mind it's not the last word when it comes to the review. Here's an example I wrote recently for a friend of mine...

This is exactly how i write/communicate my reviews.

This is a good thread. i think we should compile a list of things to comment on, or things that would be useful in constructively critisizing/reviewing a mix, possibly stick it in the DJ Promotion Board.

the thing is a good mix should stand out as a good mix. it should at least grab your attention. i mean im fairly open to most music, and i can appreciate it whether it be fast or slow, but on the mix i was listeing to there wasnt one tune that i liked or even stood out..they all just kinda sounded the same, not really going anywhere..and then i go onto a forum and see everyone saying "it was amazing..cant wait to hear more" etc. even though i actually like the style of music being played, when its done right...(was proggy+proggy breaks)

i only tend to give feedback if i liked the mix to be honest, and if i do ill give an overall general opinion of it, poiting out any tracks i thought were really good, and on the quality of the mixing.

yeah reading reviews about mixes vary alot. alot of good points are brought up in this thread so far, about how a reaction to a track can completely influence the 'quality' of the set, when in all honesty they are too different things.

also, i feel that the point of judging one's beatmatching is moot, because more than likely the dj knows when he's fucking up. however, i think its good to make comments about when tracks are dropped in, or how EQing/effects are used.

i think that when reviewing a set, its important to consider these aspects before actually commenting:
-flow of set (analyze the structure of the feel/tone of the set, regardless of genre)
-quality of track transitions (eqing/effects/placement/timing/beatmatching)
-track selection (this can be too subjective at times, refer more to the way that each track compliments each other)

there are other aspects, but i fel that those are the main three. if we get more objective/constructively critical reviews, the 'comment on my mix' threads/posts will be a more valuable addition to the dj booth.
