I had this problem when I reformated. Select "Options - Device Properties - Wave In" and make sure you have the right sound driver selected to record. Also make sure you have inputs to your soundcard turned up in your soundcards option settings.

It would be nearly impossible to record clean guitar samples without somekind of preamp tho.

i had a thread awhile back explaining how i wasn't pleases with the m-audio sound card and went with the presonus firebox! the presonus costs a little more, but very reasonibly priced for what it is and the pre's kick ass in presonus soundcard...seriously, i'd put some thought into this card, especially for recording instruments.

Have you tried using Sound Forge for a start?

Try DI'ing the guitar straight into your soundcard without the mixer. You may need a cable which will convert your phono or XLR out from the DI to a 3.5mm jack or stereo mini jack which is needed to go to the line in on your soundblaster. It can be done, I have such cables and have made others in college. I also recorded guitar using various methods in college and the instruments always went directly to the soundcard and hence were pre mix, I.E they were A/D converted by the sound card, not the mixer. Mixing only came into play after the recording of instruments was done. Hope you get that.

Happy sampling whatever you do.

P.S, if you are only sampling the guitar into your PC why would you want to use a mixer in the first place, is it to amplify or eq the sound? You can do that after you've sampled it, I just dont get the need for a mixer.
