I was going to go with something like Cubase SX but than I got to thinking about my experience level with software studios and decided to get something relatively user friendly for basically a beginner like I am.
I know my way around a digital multitracker and synthesizers so there shouldn't be any major learning curve, just figuring out where everything is and what it does.
What type of MIDI input device do the FL users here recommend so I can incorporate my synths into this project?
I have a Roland JP8000, a Roland MC505 and a Yamaha DX7 I also want to be able to plug my guitars in, my computer is a Dell Dimension 2350, I'm not too sure what my soundcard is.
It'll probably be a while before I start wanting to incorporate my synths into what I'm doing with the software but I just wanted to know ahead of time.

Hey. Good choice on the host . Youll like it even more later this month when I give all the FLS guys an early present . As for getting all of your hardware to work in FLS, I'd recomend getting asio4all and an M-Audio Delta 1010. That card is basicly a mixer on a PCI card and thatll allow you to run your synths through seperate FX channels just like a VSTi/DXi synth. If you dont want to do that, the other decent option is to get a good analog mixer and record your synths seperately and then run them through FX (or if you want, just use the onboard FX, youll just be a little more limited). There isnt a lot else you can do, even with programs like Cubase, unlike what some would like you to believe .

I started with FL3 back in the day and now I use Cubase SX... I probably could've used SX to begin with, but it would have taken much longer to understand the principles of production. There's not much that Cubase can do that FL can't, it's just a matter of difficulty...

this is so true it bears repeating.
even the things you cant do in fl that you can do in cubase can be improvised. things such as sidechaining a compressor to duck a bass note that hits on a kick. in FL you can use the peak controller or you can manually duck fruity compressor's threshold using the automation window. as long as you dont use any gain it wont colour the sound and you can stick it in the signal chain after the proprietory compressor you use.
if you cant do it in FL just by looking at it, theres always an alternative way of doing it if you use your loaf.

Thank you. I couldnt have said it better myself . ALLFRUIT vol2 will be out soon for those fruity fans. I know I keep plugging it but I'm pretty sure all of you FLS users will be satisfied with what I'm doing .

Lol. Nice pic cause its pretty fitting . FLS has full wav editing functionality as Cubase does. I will admit that it could be easier to do a lot of things, but that doesnt mean anything you can do in Cubase is impossible to do in FLS . You really like ragging on FLS. I'd quit before you get shown up .

FL Studio seems like a pretty good deal so far, I havn't had a lot of time to explore it due to my work schedule but what I have messed around with I've been pleasantly surprised with so far.
I was doing everything via hardware synths and sequencers and a hardware digital multitracker before (Korg D1600) so I think this is definitely a step up and in the right direction.
Attaching effects (like compression) to channels with the Korg was pretty limited, if I wanted to add multiple effects to a channel it took a little bit of track bouncing (depending on how many effects I was adding).
I was skeptical about the sound quality with the way some people talk about FL Studio on these message forums, but so far like I said, I've been pleasantly surprised.
Granted, it does have some cheesy samples, but than again, so do my hardware synth's.
