Tell me something about this guy...

The very first song I heard from him was "Loser" which is now years old. I really like that song, but back then I just thought he was some dude that probably didn't have any other good songs.

Lately ive been hearing more of his songs on the radio as I think he is writing music again. One thing I have noticed is that every single song I have heard from him has been original.

So my conclusion now, is that he more than likely has a couple of albums worth getting.

Could you post the names of your favourite albums by him...

kthxbye

He isn't "writing music again" because he has always been writing music. I don't have any of his albums but I have heard most of his singles. The album I've heard the most about is Sea Change. The songs on that one are pretty mellow. On the opposite end of the spectrum is Midnite Vultures, which has a lot of catchy, upbeat songs. A lot of them are electronically influenced. Odelay has most of his radio hits from the 90s, except for Loser which was on the album before that, Mellow Gold. His latest one, Guero, is also receiving a lot of praise. If I were you I would check out some samples on Amazon and see which album is your favorite.

Odelay, Mellow gold, every other beck album is really worth listening to. Amazing artist, very creative and original.

haven't heard Sea Change yet, but i've heard good things about it so i will definately check it out.

beck is one of my fave artists ...... I dont think i've listened to a single album that sounded like the next. His sound is always changing/evolving. My personal fave LP is 'Sea Change'. Some say its his worst, but to me i thought it was GREAT!!! I think he had gone through a break-up with his girl before that album so it IS pretty mellow.

I recently bought 'Guero' and while it is good, its definitely a different sound. I think he brought the Dust Brothers back to do some of the production (like his earlier albums). Its definitely more breakbeat oriented with some electronic influences thrown in. 'Midnight Vultures' is a good LP to check out also. A little abstract though IMO.

Ah-hah, a thread about Beck.

I was a fan of a few random Beck tracks for a long time before I eventually invested in his latest album 'Guero' (the deluxe edition, no less, since it was at a bargain price and featured an amazing remix by Röyksopp). I also bought 'Odelay' recently and I can safely say that both are fantastic. Nobody does it like Beck.

That said, I'm not sure that I'm brave enough to invest in any of his other albums anytime soon, apart from 'Sea Change' which appears to feature the kind of melancholic, understated sound I love.

haha Odelay was good, fun album
Mellow Gold was also brilliant,
but for some reason I really liked his style on Midnite Vultures. the whole album was fucking crazy. so sweet and yet so...experimental in a way. so soothing and yet so moving. twisted, creamy shit.
then he went soft after he got dumped (Sea Change)...and he's still a musical mastermind.
probably my favourite from this new phase: Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime

I liked Devil's Haircut, but no review or discussion on Beck has been forthcoming on what type of music he actually makes, so I'm hedging bets currently until I hear more.

I think he's one of those rare artists that literally cannot be pigeonholed. It's impossible to even attempt to categorise his music without doing it a cruel injustice. Beck is a genre unto himself, if that makes any sense at all. It sounded impressive, anyway.

Real Name: Beck Hansen
Profile: Beck David Campbell was born on July 8, 1970 in Los Angeles, the son of David Campbell and Bibbe Hansen. When his parents split, he and his younger brother stayed with their mother. Beck Hansen dropped out of school at the age of 14 and drifted around for about a decade, ending up back in Los Angeles. While playing some open mic events, he got noticed by the little local label, Bong Load Custom Records. In 1993, "Loser" was released to the world in a limited pressing of 500 copies and sent out to radio DJs across the U.S. The song became quite popular, and Geffen signed Beck in November of 1993, giving him the freedom to work with independent labels and to make "uncommercial" music.
