hey guys, I have trolled the dj forums here on ta for a while I just need to start posting more

I am wondering what you guys to for record shopping. I've been doin this for about 7 years now and I've found that in order to not break the bank but keep in touch with all the new music I have to spend about 50 bucks(5 records on dancerecords basically) a week minimum. I just set that money aside from my paycheck and try to do one order a week of the records I like. Also, I try to listen to as many records as possible and only get records I really really like, and keep listening until I find records recent or from the past that I fall in love with while listening to online. everything else seems to just sit collecting dust and never get played.

What is your budget? how often to you go shopping/place an order? Do you only get records that you think are really really awesome or all the records from the subgenre you usually associate yourself with?

thought it would be interesting to ask, seems like everyone has their own strategy for this.

Iv been spending too much, actually im looking at buying more music right now. Ever since i got Serato Scratch and a fast conection + subscribtions to online music stores iv been downloading way too much music. Imagin having a record store in ur house its no good cuz in order for me to feed my addcition its just a click away.

thats my biggest fear of opening a subscription to an online music store. id be bankrupt and wouldnt even know it until the end of the month. i dont have SSL/FS, so that helps too (although i am currently looking into SSL). SSL/FS is good in my books because i am hesitant to go digital, and this is the perfect mid ground imo.

anyway back to topic: i usually spend $100 every 2-3 weeks.. but it also depends on what else is going on in my life. as a college student i am poor to begin with, and a vinyl addiction is crippling. i have been using dancerecords.com as well.. good selection & samples

I use SSL. I have always been very selective about the tunes I buy, so I don't go overboard in terms of how many - usually try to hit the online stores up once a fortnight, and buy between 5-10 tunes, which costs me no more than $30. The cheapest vinyl I've found costs $16.95 here in Australia. I still buy some vinyl, usually only 1-2 per month of tunes I really like but can't get online.

Iv just started working and im already spending about $100 every two or maybe three weeks ($100 coz thats free shiping). I think ill do this for a while so i have a decent sized collection then i cut down.
Its hard when you just going through the online store and you start hearing stuff so u think to yourself "ok, ill ad it to my shopping cart but i wont buy untill next week" then you have a heap of records and just think "well they are going to go out of stock if i dont order them and i can just order these now.."
Then before you know it you just baught an extra weeks worth of records.

now that i'm pretty much done w/my set up. -equipment wise

i find myself spending about 200-300 a month. a good 60% goes toward downloading music.

lately my collection has been growing physically, but not growing to fast in terms the number of titles i have. i've been spending maybe about 50-70% of the 200-300 doubling/tripling certain songs.

i'm such a junkie. if i didn't have to save money, and leave the country at the end of the year, i'd be spending atleast double.

quick question i've never thought of asking..... why double or triple records that are identical???

I spend between $45(3 wax) and $120 (8 wax) CDN per month, depending on my bank account's beligerance, on records. I also set aside between $20 and $40 (10 to 20 tracks) for digital purchases which get burned to CD, on a bi-monthly period,.
As an ex-student with $15000+ of student debt to pay off... I always feel ill spending cash on music, but I'm a DJ and I'm addicted and I love it to death so whatthehell!!

I try to grab tracks that I would figure others tend to leave alone or sometimes I'm more patient and optimistic for the tracks that seem weak. I think of how it would sound in a club, cuz the bass gets AMPED to hell, and you hear everything much much LOUDER. I span genres for similarities too, so instead of just looking at house and trance, I look at the options in electro and electronica and funk, and breaks, etc. Variety is truly/always the spice of life.

I should probably add the fact that November/December/January I'm avoiding most all purchases in order to afford a new lovely Denon DN-X1500. It's my Chrismukkah gift to myself

i double, and triple my fav jams so i have back ups.


i do this w/all of my fav records. especially the older more obscure stuff, and the records i play out in the desert are my top priorities when i'm procurring doubles and triples.


plus, i want to have clean records when i get into the whole archiving thing... i want to have the best mp3's possible. i don't to listen to an mp3 that sounds like it's been played at the last 10-15 desert parties w/all the crackles n' pops... ya know?
