Death toll from road accidents 390 times that from terrorism: study

The body count from road accidents in developed economies is 390 times higher than the death toll in these countries from international terrorism, says a study appearing in a specialist journal, Injury Prevention. In 2001, as many people died every 26 days on American roads as died in the terrorist attacks of 9/11, it says.

I can vouch for this.

I lost control of my Oldsmobile Delta 88 and slammed into a wall at about 45 mph. I was able to walk away with just slight dizzyness.
My van was t-boned by some idiot making a u-turn without looking. The van had only recieved damage to the left front wheel and axle. All occupants walked away.
A brother in law of mine had lent his Honda out to his other brother in law who rear ends someone on NY Route 100 while he was tuning the radio. The car was totaled. Sister in law and husband survive with minor injury.
A friend of mine had his BMW 750IL t-boned in the parking lot of Orchard Beach in the Bronx, NY by some dumb broad who thought that 25mph is ok for a parking lot. Car was repaired and is now driven by his sister while he does his tour in a non-combatant role in Iraq.
I have had friends nearly hit deer on several occasions.
Another friend of mine fell asleep at the wheel and total his Acura.
A former foreman of mine has put his truck into a ditch coming from Pennsylvania on his way to work. He hit black ice he says. This is the only friend I know that has witnessed the terror attacks of 9/11 but was not a victim. He worked near Chambers Street station (it's a few blocks away from WTC) of the J line.

We have yet to be attacked by terrorists.

Exactly. The war on terror is blown out of proportion...

Until people you know start dying tragic deaths at the hand of rogue terrorists. There's hardly a dime this country will spare to prosecute a murderer or to find a missing person. Should we pare things back there as well?

In other news, we need to decare a war on Soccer Moms. Who's with me?

BMW 750IL, eh? Would it have mattered if it was an '87 Nova?

Yeah and when was your last multi billion dollar pre empetive strike against murderers?

And as for traffic, you can cut that quite markebly without any major investments (at least not even close to what the war on terror costs). For example Sweden cut its number of dead in traffic, by 50% the last 10 years (at the same time as the US numbers have been pretty much the same). In the US you have about 43 000 fatalities per year, which means if you could cut that in half you would save almost 10 times the number of people that were killed in 9/11 every year.

I don't know any terrorists. I don't know of anyone that knows terrorists.

The only people who know who are the terrorists are the government and the media.

The same people that told me Saddam was hiding weapons of mass destruction.

People that make statements like yours wouldn't mind getting an subdermal biometric implant if it's for your own safety.

Those were real life examples. Examples where I am sure if you thought about it for one minute of your life that in the same time it took for you to reply:

How many people do you know of were involved in a car accident?
and
How many people do you know that were targeted by terrorists?

At least someone reads:
