Researching digital DJ's...

Hi Guys and girls, my second post here so please be kind!

I'm preparing a column that I'm writing for in IDJ magazine so need to do some research. If any of you are embracing technology and using a computer as your choice of format to DJ with, are you using a Midi/USB controller? If so;

1. What make and model unit are you using?
2. What software programme do you use it with?
3. What functions do you use and like about it?
4. What functions are missing from the controller that you would like to see?
5. Does the controller give you the 'hands on' experience that you love about DJing?
6. Is it a duel controller and sound card?
7. Lastly, your thoughts on computer Djing?

Great to see you posting on here, John

I can't really help, but I thought I would bump this thread so that people will notice it.

1. What make and model unit are you using?
Evolution X-Session (soon getting Behringer BCR2000)
2. What software programme do you use it with?
Ableton Live 5
3. What functions do you use and like about it?
Simple design, 16 assignable knobs. 10 Programmable buttons. Easy to program. Small. Powered USB 2.0 interface.
4. What functions are missing from the controller that you would like to see?
More knobs ... But I guess that would defeat the purpose of having a small, portable controller.
5. Does the controller give you the 'hands on' experience that you love about DJing?
It's a totally different 'feeling' than with traditional formats... the experience is less about the 'feel' of mixing and more about the creative avenues you can explore by manipulating the music... it still feels great to come up with a creative way to manipulate your tunes.
6. Is it a duel controller and sound card?
I use an M-audo firewire audiophile external soundcard. So yes.. i think.
7. Lastly, your thoughts on computer Djing?
I enjoy both traditional mixing and mixing in ableton live. If you want to do something more musically interesting or challenging, computer DJing may be the way to go. If you want that 'fun factor', something that a crowd can see and relate to a little more, then I'd say traditional mixing would be more appropriate. But I don't think either has a complete advantage over the other. Different strokes for different folks, as some might say

Re: Researching digital DJ's...

1. What make and model unit are you using?

Evolution MK429 keyboard

2. What software programme do you use it with?

Ableton Live 5

3. What functions do you use and like about it?

Being able to assign EQ/FX/clips/tracks to keys and knobs

Huge flexibility in setup options. Its not just a DJing tool, but a production/performance suite

4. What functions are missing from the controller that you would like to see?

Hmm... holographic interfaces? It does the job, but would dearly love one those Lemur touchscreen controllers.

5. Does the controller give you the 'hands on' experience that you love about DJing?

Not really, but I dont really view it as Djing in the traditional sense.

6. Is it a duel controller and sound card?

No I use an audiophile which has dual outputs.

7. Lastly, your thoughts on computer Djing?

The lines will become blurred to the point that computer DJing will become an artform of its own, albiet more of a technical one.

this pretty much the same answers i was gonna give

1. What make and model unit are you using?
Faderfox LV1(MIDI controller) attached to my M-Audio audiophile

5. Does the controller give you the 'hands on' experience that you love about DJing?
Yes and it also gives a greater degree of sensitivity (in my opinion) and it gives you the ability to change something using only one sense (touch) vs two senses when changing something on your computer (sight and touch)... hopefully that makes sense
