If i were you id get the M Audio Firewire Audiphile for £150, thats what i just got for my laptop, mine was D.O.D. due to shipping so ima have to wait for another one, but that card seems the best, If not theres the audigy 2 zs pcmcia card for £100.

I heard about reliability problem with m-audio stuff especially the firewire audiophile, so it has put me off that product a bit.

Any other suggestions?

I recently bought the M - Audio firewire audiophile for my laptop, costing me £150, seems as theres no pci slot id rather go firewire than usb. So it came the other week, i install the drivers as it says, connect it all up, it lights up and powers on, then just sits there. It should've self installed by now, so i reboot and try again, still nothing.

I tryed it on my desktop aswell, still nothing. So i rang up m audio tech support and asked if it was a known problem, the technician blamed my laptop saying it has an irq conflict. So all the same i ring up the manufacturers of my laptop to see if i can get the firewire onto its own irq channel ( it shared irq 17 with one of the 5 usb ports) which i couldnt. I then rang back m audio and he said i should really be using a powerbook for audio applications ( i think he's on commission from Steve Jobs). I then proceeded to tell him that id tryed to use the unit on 3 other computers and still nothing, He told me its very rare for them to not function. So he said to send it back.

I sent it back and got an email saying they had received it back, and it took them 5 says to decide it was broken down after all. now i have to wait and see it they can repair it or not and if not they'll send me a new unit. Given the time of year i doubt ill see a replacement this year.

Not only that compared to my audigy 4 pro i use on my desktop the build quality left something to be desired, from the feel of the box to the control knobs it just didnt feel like it was worth £150, the audigy 4 looks and feels more the high quality unit from the two. Just shame laptops dont accept pci cards.

So when i finally see a unit again ill have to see if the sound can match up to the all hype, as the build quality sure doesnt.

I go back on my word and no longer recommend them, go for something else

I has the same problems when I first got mine too....but after I d/l the most recent driver off the m-audio website, everything worked fine....and BTW, I am using an IBM A31 laptop...

I tryed first time with the new drivers from the site and nothing, tryed with the old and nothing. Atleast they admitted the unit is at fault i suppose
