Hey Everyone....

I knew that with my old computer I had to put in two sticks at a time in order to get it to register with machine.

With my new machine, I am not too sure...I remember a friend of mine telling me that I only needed one at a time.

Yesterday I opened up my machine and saw only one available slot...so I went out and bought a 128 ram stick. I came back, went to put it in and noticed there were two open slots (DOH!...I missed one the first time)

So I stuck it in the slot closest to the one that already had one installed. Nothing...then I tried to put it in the other one, nothing. Am I doing something wrong, or do you suggest that I go get another stick?

I'm almost sure that it has nothing to do with there having to be either one or three sticks at once. More like different speeds, size or label between them - check your motherboard manual/website for info on this. You might want to try sticking it in a friends machine and check that it actually works - *theoretically* you could have damaged it or it has faults in it.

I hope you get it to work, there's nothing more frustrating than buying computer hardware that you can't use.

if its a new system that uses DIMM's instead of SIMM's (as they all do now) then u shouldnt need to fill all of the slots or have them in any ratio's or shit like that.. because memory making type ppl have made it simpler...

my best bet is u have got the wrong speed of memory for ur motherboard... check your motherboard manual to see what speed memory it takes.. this will probably be pc100 or higher... if your board is brand spankin new it should be fully backwards compatible... but it ur board isnt brand spankin new u could have bought pc133 memory when ur board can only take pc100..

..or something..

also if ur using the new RIMMs (or rambus) u may need a newer version of windows for ur comp to accept it. like my dads machine needs windows XP (or 2000 i cant rememebr) to run more than 256 but im not sure that the problem in ur case!

n jeff im not sure about equal ratios for all DIMMs, i heard some motherboards and DIMM types need that (maybe the 133mhz?) sort of thing, but mine is just pc100 DIMMS and i can whack anything in up to 512k

the reason they made DIMMs instead of SIMMs is because SIMMS need the ratio and thats crap.. no DIMMs to mu knowledge need equal ratio

To my knowledge the only type of memory modules that need to be put in in sets is Rambus DRDRAM and thats only on the Intel 850 chipset and equivalent that supports the Pentium 4

I was curious,

what if you put in 1 133PCRAM
and 1 100PCRAM

does this work, do they both run at 100?

As long as the mainboard supports pc100 ram yes it will work basically pc100 works at 100mhz, pc133 works at 133mhz but it can also work at 100mhz if needed to

im just curious to know if there is a such thing as a pentium ram and an AMD ram? my friend told me he sold me a pentium 256pc133 ram by accident when I have an AMD motherboard.(doh). so it dosen't seem to work.....is my friend BS to me?

DDR is for AMD processors and RAMBUS is for Pentium systems, whereas standard PC133 RAM is for both systems. I don't know if the two first mentioned types will work in the other system, but you'll definately not get the speed up that you're paying extra for.
