Vacation time!! Resort recommendations pls!!

So the cold weather and snow are here - That can only mean that vacation season is upon us. Rog & I have decided to book a trip for the week of December 17-24th.

Any recommendations for resorts in Mexico (NOT including Cancun) and/or Dominican Republic?? Or even some bad reviews of resorts in these 2 countries we should avoid?

We look at all the last-minute sites religiously everyday - so we know there are good deals to be found.. we are simply looking for resort recommendations.

We are planning on booking our trip early next week. Any help would be appreciated!

agreed 100%

its about 45 minutes south of playa del carmen (sp). theres two of them - bahia principe akumal and bahia principe tulum. they're run by the same group/people..but one side is more adult friendly (topless beach..no kids) and one is more family-orientated (games in the pool..no nudes ..day care etc!

the resort has everything u need, and if not..go stand by the main road..and flick your lighter whenever you see a white van driving down. 150 pesos will get you to playa del carmen..shopping is right on the road running parallel to the beach

Seeing as they aren't even flying to most of mexico because of the damage done by the recent hurricanes, I wouldn't suggest looking there. I recently booked a trip leaving dec. 30th for Hilton's Coral Costa Caribe. Came out to 1170 taxes in, which is pretty decent considering the time of the vacation. Ive been to the resort before, its a decent resort... crappy food, but I usually expect that in the caribbean.

What is your price range? If you are willing to spend the money, I'd recommend Jamaica, bahamas, or one of the virgin islands. Cuba right now is fairly chilly, so I would suggest going farther south.

If money is an issue, Dominican is great bang for the buck. Pretty decent "cheap" hotels are Paradise Beach, Gran Ventana, and Jack Tar Village in Puerto Plata. I've stayed at all 3. If you are looking for a nicer area, go to Punta Cana instead.

I know you can go to Bali, Indonesia for less than $1500, including airfare and hotel accomodations, and a pick-up and drop-off at the airport.

Despite warnings that people say about the place, Bali needs tourism or else it'll turn back into a farming island. The beaches are beautiful and the people are so friendly -- and everything is cheap! A 4 to 5-star meal with that 'clean the pallet' ice cream before the main course only costs $15US for two people.

You take out $100 and you're a millionaire.

Plus, it's summer there. Lots of Australian hotties if you go to the right place. Only reccomendation: stay away from American hangouts, they're not too nice to Americans, but they love Europeans and Canadians. It's just politics.

Oh, and no drugs. There is a death sentence there if you're caught with any.

I'm not sure if you have been on www.tripadvisor.com, but this site has amazing information on any type of resort anywhere in the world. You can view hotel photos from people who have actually been there, so there is no surprise/deception from the hotel photos on most travel sites. I would suggest Puerto Vallarta - I had booked into the Dreams hotel but had to cancel. Also, the Fiesta Americana, Crown Paradise and Golden Crown Paradise are all fantastic locations. I would recommend using tripcentral.ca for the most reasonalbe prices leaving from Toronto - I've had really good luck finding prices that match my budget through them.

If you read in the forums section of the tripadvisor site, you may want to avoid the whole Cancun and Mayan Riveria section of Mexico - most resorts have been destroyed and are not even accepting reservations.

Hope this helps...

M.
