MP3 Bitrate problem

Hi !

I'm buying my mp3s on legal downloa store like trackitdown, beatport or dance-tunes

The fact is that dance-tunes are selling their tracks 0.99€ with a bitrate of 192kbps and trackitdown, beatport sell their tracks 2€ with 320kbps bitrate.

So i ask you if there is a real difference between 192 & 320 kbps bitrate
I've tried the same track (sander van doorn - AKA) at both bitrate and i t seems i can't hear the difference between the two bitrate with my soundsystem ....
But on a bigger soundsystem (club etc ...) is it possible to hear the difference ?

if youre only buying them to listen to, then 192 is fine. but it'll sound awful on a decent system, so youd never play them out.

if you go and grab (say) a 64 bit sample, listen to that awful scratchy-sounding noise they make, the 192 makes that same noise, just a *lot* less obvious. but you'll hear it on a big system.

actually Im pretty sure that none of us can tell the difference between 320k and 192k in the club, when we are just out for the fun of it and not *trying* to tell whether the dj is playing 192 or 320. The difference is not that big

I always buy my mp3s 320kbps. Since the whole mp3-piracy-network has 192 as the standard it just makes sense to buy 320k instead and have the edge over the people that just pirate the 192k's

you can "up" the bit rate carnt you.....im not to sure but the sound quality over all improves if you convert it say 192Kbs to 800Kbs or change the Format to .WAV where ive seen bit rates shoot up to 2000+

Dont know if it has a proper effect on sound ( but it does on your HDD )

My Highest bit rate Tune is 4 Strings - Take me away ( Coast 2 Coast remix ) @ 3072Kbs 126Mb and its sound completly AWESOME!!!!!

Where you'll hear the difference a lot of the time is if you mix into a 192k track, you'll notice it loses a certain amount of the bottom end of the track. On a really good system, like a properly set up function one system or something, you will be able to hear the digital distortion which will just make it sound a bit rough and a bit harsher on the ears.

And upping the bitrate does absolutely fuckall, you can't obtain sound quality from nowhere... in encoding a 192k file you lose certain parts of the data the encoder deems to be less important. You can't just put these back in again, cos the 192k file doesn't know what it's missing!

Why do people buy mp3's?
Yes, they are fine to listen to up close and maybe upload it to your mp3 player but when you put them on a big system, you really hear how they are compressed and clipped. As far as I am concerned mp3 is just for sampling, not for enjoyment

Personally I can't stand mp3's. They sound awful, basically make me want to shoot myself. I remember in high school dances I could tell the moment the DJ put on an mp3... terrible! But yeah, save your ears 320kbps or better.

I've just found that on the internet

As you can see @ 192kbps you start to have some loss with sounds > 16khz and i know that the human ear can't listen to sounds > 17khz

See the bottom line of this graph (called "seuil de perception" in french )

So i think human can't hear the difference between 320kbps & wave original track.
Perhaps there are some little difference between 192kbps & 320kbps, have to more tests

well, i guess im lucky that i dont go to clubs where DJs try and play 192s. i can hear the difference on my home setup, so im just assuming the difference would be even more obvious on a pro system.

tests are not necessary. no respectable DJ would ever play a 192 mp3. theres a reason for it. it sounds shit. dont let the cheaper prices fool you into buying them.

no wonder the vinyl industry is going to shit

To be Honest I don't find much difference between 320 kbps and 192 kbps, both sound almost the same as WAV, altough I can hear the difference from a 128 kbps MP3 and a 192 kbps.

if you are on 192 kbps or abpove It hink you are going ot be fine-
