So you're wondering what programs to start out with eh? Well this is the place to ask. Depending on your budget, there's a few different programs you can get. Now I'm going to be slightly biased just because it's what I'm currently using but...I really like FL Studio. Cubase can do the same stuff, so can Ableton Live and other programs. Reason is nice because you don't need any VST's and it's got all the instruments you need but...to some it's just not what you're looking for. Ableton is really nice once you learn how to use it. There isn't really a steep learning curve I think and you can use VSTs with it. Cubase can do things FL can't do as easily. FL is pretty user friendly and once you get the hang of things and just mess around with it, you realize there's just so much to learn. My best advice is to just try out the demos and see what host program you like most. I'm going to assume that you'll like either Cubase or FL more, but try them out and see what suits you best. VSTs obviously cost extra money, but you can make some good hardware sounds with the VSTs. If you go the VST route, I'd say go with z3ta+, V-station, Albino, and Pro-53. I seem to use those the most. Vanguard is also really nice, but I mainly only use that if I'm going to layer it with something like z3ta+ or V-station. Good luck finding what suites you best.

Where do you start?

Well, you could start by reading the stickies.

You'll be fine with FL Studio and a bucketload of VST's (effects) & VSTi's (Instruments). I use Reaktor, Vanguard, V-Station, Hypersonic & Z3ta plus others and they rock! You just need to sit and work out how they work. I had a friend that used FL, so I asked him the odd question and did a couple of collaborations with him and then just carried on and learnt more. I taught myself cubase back in the day (soundblaster AWE32 card with 32mb RAM!), so I was familiar with sequencing. but FL Studio balances power & usability so well, I would highly reccomend it to you. You can pick up loads of tips on here and audiopioneers network (members only, unfortunately), and there are loads of freebie VST's & VSTi's out there. The world is your oyster!

Hope this helps.
