I have started recently to cue-start all of my tracks to beatmatch them with my decks. I got it to work great for a while but now i cannot seem to match correctly consistently like i could last week. Is this some type of plateau of skill? Am i hearing the beats more clearly and therefore more critical of myself? Are my decks fucked up somehow? I just don't get it when i match them with the headphones and then pull the fader across and they are galloping away......Please help me. Any new techniques or suggestions on mixing are appreciated.

The reason your records sound like a lawnmower going over rocks is because obviously the records aint beatmatched properly

this is what helped me.....
cue up the next record, find out if it is going faster or slower than the record playing, then adjust the pitch accordingly.....if you adjusted the pitch to much.....then half the difference between where you had the pitch first, to where you moved it......then keep halfing the difference each time, and keep cue'ing each time you adjust the pitch, then you should be within a hairs bredth.

then over a period of time, you will do this without even thinking it


hopefully your record playing wouldnt have run out by the time, your outgoing record is beatmatched and cued up

You have given yourself the answer really.

You do reach plateus in DJing. A lot of young DJs can bang out a mix and think it's the best thing since sliced bread and will for all intents and purposes think they have arrived at the final destination. Not so as the more you listen to yourself the more you will see your improvements over time.

We frequently see the comments "I have mastered beatmatching" on the forums and seldom is that the case. You can't really say that you have mastered it until you can week after week bang out sets in a consistant fashion.

You will also find that you will have periods when as you say, you just can't get it right. This can depend on plenty of factors such as concentration levels and how tired you are etc.

Don't be disheartened by this, as the more proficient you become at spinning the less attention you will have to pay to it. When you are comfortable with what you are doing then you tend to focus more on the performance in itself wether you are by yourself or in a club.
I imagine you are still at a level where you a concious of what you are doing and thinking about matching rather than just doing it. This is natural and will most definately pass depending how much you practice.

if you are beatmatching very early in the cue track and then wait till near the end to mix it in, the bpms of either track can change slightly. once you are proficient in beatmatching, you can beatmatch the track as you are bringing it in which virtually negates any bpm changes.

after a while, while beatmatching, i noticed i am better at telling when a track is slightly off and it's almost too close to move the pitch at all.....but you can move the pitch a millimeter....i know i fall into periods where i overcorrect and move the pitch more than i should.
