Hey,

I understand this is a bit of a general question but does anyone have any tips on how make a track sound quite dirty in it's structure? Dirty basslines intrigue me more than anything. Any small tips would be great.

Don't have any specific examples at the moment but if I'm being too general I can come back with some.

Distortion. And lots of dissonant interval progressions, like tritones or minor seconds.

There is no dirty structure, just dirty sounds. Personally, I think the dirty concept is being taken to a bit of an extreme these days - it can sound really cool and get everyone moving at a club when used as a contrast against a musically rich backdrop, but when an entire track or entire SET is just dirty, well...

All rhythm evolves around a kick...

drop whatever synth you want dirty an octave, and remove the higher notes from your melody, add distortion and bass/overdrive/compress, add another synth playing the same (or varied) melody in original octave, without notes removed, add slight distortion, to taste.

A good distortion VST is Karnage, it has some really good sounds like distorted pads and basslines

Yes. Uber-funky effect is to use the bitcrusher as a low-pass filter, too.

Oh, and I forgot the most important thing:
TC SONIC DESTRUCTOR! I *heart* that thing. One of the things it has is what they call a "bitter", which seems to be kind of a bit randomizer - it randomly flips certain bits in the signal and just makes it totally nasty and lo-fi. Gotta be careful with it though because too much of that might give the listener a heart attack, or at the very least a throbbing headache.

On top of the distortion and overdrive etc.....try adding record crackle and hiss with cubase "grungulizer" or simalar.

Thats a good idea also but I dont use cubase so are there are vsts which would be compatible with fruity for this kind of sound?
