[MTA - Not Goin Our Way] - Transit Stories

Ok so the other thread is devoted to all the ranting and raving, opinions about this and that, now let me shed some light on the experiences we've had during this time.

So spill your encounters, your stories of trekking, the strange people you meet in crowded cabs, all that jazz I wanna hear it

-----------------------

I'll start it off

I walked from 77th st to 34th st tuesday morning. Decided to gear up in jeans, sneakers, long sleeve t-shirt with a polo shirt over, my beanie, my snowboarding gloves, and my boarding bag to lug some essentials with me. All strapped up music in and I head out say 9:15am~ish from my place to start my trek...

About 2 blocks down broadway my sneakers start to hurt my feet and the cold penetrates my jeans as if they weren't even there. I purge on thinking I'll walk alittle faster, my feet'll adjust to the sneakers and build up a nice warm sweat so my legs wont be cold.

Ok, 68th street and going, alittle sweaty still cold nonetheless, and I'm completely focused in on the set im listening to and not about how much more I need to walk. Then it hits me, 66th street my earbud goes BEEP BEEP BEEP and the music cuts off. FUCKSHITFUCKBITCHASSFUCKSHIT yea that about sums it up. Too far to turn back too far to continue going so I purge on without music just looking at store fronts. Finally arrive at work at 10:25am and my polo shirt is pretty damp at this point. My legs and face began to thaw out as I sat at my desk.

Needless to say it was one of the worst ideas to come to work because about 60% of the company was out and I had to deal with some asshat co-worker who insistedly obligated me to HIS projects be it that he will be out all of next week so he gave me busy work to do for his accounts GREAT. I stormed out of work at 3pm without any reason, just said I'm going home bye.

So I was pretty vamped leaving work I decided fuck it, see how much a cab cost. I walked over to the cab line which was surprisingly EMPTY with a full line of empty cabs waiting. I walk up to one and asked him how much to go uptown, he readily whipped out this print out of zones and said $10, I said OK USA lets do this...then as I stood up from talking through the passenger window some asian guy asked me if I was goin uptown and if he could hop it, I looked at him to make sure he wasn't psycho and said sure. He was goin up to 100th and Bway, it's on the way I thought

So the cab ride was interesting, I was in a cab with someone I didn't know who didn't really speak good english and I didn't really care. All I cared about was getting home after a bullshit of a day. So as we go up 8th ave the cab driver stops and tries to pick up more people. Funny he picked up another 2 people (this old guy and his wife) so now I'm stuck in the middle of a cab with random strangers, a fob asian to my left and a middle aged woman to my right and I'm smack in the middle with my snowboard jacket on just staring through that little window barrier. Took forever to get back to my place...I hopped out, paid my $10 and continued on my way.

Decided that after all that for the amount of work I did and the amount they are paying me, I wasn't gonna go back in to work today so here I am, slept till 10am (never done that as I'm usually up at 5am), spent 2.5hrs at the gym where I'd usually spend 1.5hrs rushing, and no had lunch sitting infront of the computer wondering, does anyone else have any weird transit story? not that mines was irregular or anything...

so tell me how MTA Didn't Go Your Way....

Nothing really interesting here. I made sure my iPod was charged (Brian, for all those anti-iPod comments about battery life, mine was OK ) and listened to the first half of the Eddie Halliwell Live @ Lush set from a month ago. I took me about an hour before I got in to the office. I wore my sneakers, khakis, a turtleneck, my ski jacket and a hat so I changed into my work clothes that I carried when I got in and did my hair since it's all long and shaggy (which doesn't go so well with the hat).

Looking forward to the walk home tonight. At least it gives me the chance to return some shoes to J Crew that I ordered online and are too big since I haven't been in Soho lately.

[tuesday]

walked from 67th rd and austin street to the forest hills LIRR station to find a booth setup on street level and a queue to buy tickets (ticketholders were allowed to go right up to the platform). thought, hey this might not be too bad. so i followed the line onto burns street... and kept going til i went to ascan avenue... then followed it up to austin, where it finally ended across the street from the church there on austin and ascan. WOW. took about three hours to get back to near the booth. the whole time, it was assumed that the tickets would be sold cash only, because of that booth. when i got near the front, one of the mta guys was saying if you want to use your credit card to buy your tickets at the machines, you may do so. great, so i waited all that time for that bs.

the trains were empty. less than 15 people in the car i was at going into penn station. from penn station i walked to grand central station, as i work in the metlife building that sits atop the station.

the ride home wasn't too bad.

[wednesday]

30 min wait, as i bought tickets tuesday. the queue for ticketholders went about halfway down burns between continental and ascan.

so the funny thing in all this... i've bought 6 tickets at 4$ each, and have had only one taken by conductors so far, and that was when the car was empty tuesday morning. three rides for 4 bucks so far on LIRR. not bad i guess.

tomorrow i think i'm going to start going to/from the LIRR with my rollerblades. that walk from penn station to GCT is no joke.

I’ve been pretty lucky the past couple mornings.

Tuesday I met up with 2 friends, who also work at hospitals on the upper east side. We left my apt at 16th Street and 1st Avenue around 8:40am, caught a cab a few blocks up for $5/person, and I was at my office on 63rd and 1st Avenue by 9:05am. There was definitely less traffic than on a normal morning.

Today we met up at the same time and proceeded up 1st Avenue. We had trouble finding a cab and were prepared to walk the 50 blocks, but a random soccer mom pulled over in her SUV and offered all three of us a ride. She looked pretty harmless and her little girl was in the car, so we hopped in. She came from Riverdale and was dropping her kid off at school before going to work. Her little girl asked all of us our names, where we’re from, and what languages we speak. We taught her how to say hello in Tagalog, which is kumusta. When she found out we all worked at hospitals she told us about Reiki therapy, which she strongly believes in. It’s basically channeling spiritual energy through the body to clear blockages and restore harmony and balance. Interesting lady. When she dropped me off at work she wouldn’t accept any money. Instead, she asked that each of us do something nice for someone we’d never see again. Not a bad way to start the day!
