Is drug use the outcome of a bad childhood?

i still have yet to meet anyone who had a pretty "normal" upbringing who does drugs. it seems like pretty much everyone who does drugs on a weekend basis had a disfunctional childhood. and i don't mean that everyone who does drugs was tortured and beaten as a child...simply being a child of divorce would count.

i didn't exactly have the greatest childhood and i've been messing around with drugs since i was like 16.

this one friend of mine who is hilarious, is the biggest cokehead ever...he's the nicest guy and a lot of fun to party with, but man, did HE ever have a fucked up life. he came from an Amish family in Pennsylvania. hahah i guess when he turned 18, he was like PEACE OUT! can u imagine living the first half of your life like that, and then moving to Miami only to become a major cokehead and a playgirl model (he was featured in that magazine twice). jeeez!

define good upbringing.

do you have a solid, healthy relationship with both parents? are they still together? did they fight a lot when u were growing up? did you have a brother or sister who was horrible to you? did you get picked on in school or ignored by the popular crowd?

I have a relationships with both of my parents, they are still together. Sure, they fought when I was growing up, but only the normal biccering. I got along alright with both my brother and my sister and my brother and I are like best friends. I wasn't ever picked on really nor was I ignored by anyone deemed popular. I kinda fit in with everyone that didn't annoy me.

So all in all, not a bad upbringing. I just like to get fuck-ed up.

i think drug use (or abuse) may be more common in people who had a difficult childhood or upbringing... but who's to say what a "normal" family is? society? the divorce rate is so high, and i've known more kids who came from divorced parents rather than kids whose parents were still together... and in some cases i think it's much healthier for the children (and parents) if the parents do get divorced. i don't really think there's such a thing as a "normal" family... every family has their problems.

i dunno... my parents are divorced. i do drugs. my brother doesn't.

I had a close relationship with my father, yeah he was strict at times but he pretty much allowed me to do a lot of things & he was there for me. He was very against drugs & all that but in one conversation when he asked if I had ever done I told him the truth

I told him I had done X once & never agan (he knew was it was cuz back in 99 it was all over the news), same with weed & I even told him about acid (not that he knew that it was) I didn't go into detail about how many times cuz that was a tad much.

I didn't tell him about coke cuz that would rip his heart...

all in all I don't think drug usage has to do with how you grew up, it may be the case with some but not everyone.

well i guess it was just a coincidence that the few "normal" people i know don't do drugs and haven't even tried them. "normal" meaning, their parents are still together and generally happy, no bad fighting going on in the house or abuse really...but lucid is right...every family has its skeletons. that is the truth.

actually, now that i think of it...my mom had an alcoholic mother and she doesn't do drugs. i mean she experiemented (she grew up in the 70's) but she is a really responsible and drug free person. my mom doesn't even drink really. just wine every now and then, but that's it.

sorry, disregard the thread. or hijack it...whatever

essay exams ftw!

No, I wouldn't say a bad childhood causes drug abuse. However, i'd say it is likely that a "bad" childhood increases the chances of one exercising "bad" habits in one's adult life like drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, violence, and/or other mental disorders. Whichever best reflects either what made one's childhood "bad" or what helped one cope with it. Not that one is guaranteed to cause the other, though.
