Sweden - Global Domination Is Near!

Sweden - famous for some of the most beautiful women in the world and the best porn in the world, it is now on the map for something else: thier dance music.

The land of Henrick Larsson and Abba is running amok these days in the dance scene. Fair enough, we all know about 'The Swedish House Mafia' who have dominated the house scene over the last year but it is starting to spread into other genres. And there is one major factor that is in the Swedes' favour that may have them ruling the scene for years to come: most of the DJs/Producers are really, REALLY young.

Ok, so everyone knows about 'The House Mafia' which includes Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Eric Prydz. They have completely dominated the house scene for the last year or two. And I wouldn't mind, but nealry all of their releases have been of an unbelievably high quality. They have the house scene in the bag, and yet thier 'Mafia' is growing. Newer additions include Rasmus Faber - been making music for a couple of years and really starting to get noticed now, and John Dahlback - this fella is only 20 and has released over 30 EPs!!! Add these to their veteran house producer Stonebridge and you can see why I reckon their dominance looks set to last for a good while yet.

Then we go to the prog house/trance genre, my favoured genre. Sweden's influence in this genre has been steadily growing over the last few years and is now one of the biggest players. Artists like David West, Ozgur Can, Probspot, Inkfish, Martin H, Rouzbeh Delavari and Son Kite have all being releasing great stuff over the last while and for me, no other nation has released as many good prog house/trance tracks over the last year or two. Between Probspot, Ozgur and David West, there have been an unhealthy amount of quality material released. Tunes like 'Foreplay', 'External Key', 'Changed' and 'Larry Mountains' have really raised the standard within the prog trance genre imo.

Trance wise, they are far from dominant but their are many DJs/producers beginning to have an impact i.e. Mike Shiver, Envio, Active 8. Whereas Adam Beyer has been at the forefront of the techno genre for many years now.

Basically, I just cant understand how such a nation with such a small population and relatively average club scene(going by what Axwell, Probspot etc have stated in interviews) has such a large share of the good dance music being released and I think everyone should take notice of Sweden as a major contributor to the scene. I would love to know whether the Swedes are just abnormally gifted for music or whether they just have nothing else to do. Whatever it is, I take my hat off to Sweden as a nation and to all those artists who have accounted for basically 2/3 of my favourite material over the last year or so.

The difference being?

As for the topic, Sweden's a very developed country, and pretty damn big too. I mean, Holland isn't an obvious cultural centre of Europe like Britain, Germany or Italy etc. are, but it's had a big influence on dance music in the last decade, so why not Sweden?

it's strange how you can mention Sweden and EDM in the same post, and at the same time leave out names like Jesper Dahlbäck, Tobias Von Hofsten, Joel Mull, Cari Lekebusch, Hardcell, Pär Grindvik, Henrik B, Thomas Krome etc...

Considering these names, and what they have done for the scene, not only in Sweden, but also in the international scene, it's easy to understand that Sweden has actually been on the map (when it comes to EDM) for a long time..

Progressive trance is just that: trance. Prog house has been dead as an individual sub-genre for years, so "progressive" and "trance" are interchangable.

quite right. they are the real swedish heroes..
though all mentioned in this thread (techno or house) are quality. but still EDM is a large minority here

I'd like to add Håkan Lidbo, Petter, Antiloop (can't tell if they're broken up or not?) & Andreas Tilliander. Sweden, home of indifference, can have it's moments
(great thread, keep it up )

agreed, I should have mentioned them. many of them are more tech based than what I am into and a bit before my generation, but I still agree about the contribution they made.

Imo, they started the ball rolling, but Sweden has made a massive resurgence in the dance world over the last year or so, which has made the nation's contribution bigger than ever.
