In no uncertain terms the U.S. Ambassador to Canada has made it clear to Mr. Martin to cut his electioneering tactics of slamming the U.S. to score political points up North. As if Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe wasn't enough we have Martin involved in election time U.S. bashing. Ironically the U.S. ambassador highlighted that while Mr. Martin was criticizing the U.S. in Montreal last week, "the United States is, in fact, reducing emissions and spending more money on tackling climate change than any other country in the world, having spent over 20 billion dollars in the last five years," said Wilkins. and Wilkins noted the United States has a better track record on cutting its greenhouse-gas emissions, as a percentage of its total, than Canada does.Since Kyoto was signed, Canada's emissions have gone up 24 per cent over 1990 levels, while U.S. emissions have climbed 13.3 per cent from 1990 to 2003. "I would respectfully submit to you that when it comes to a 'global conscience,' the United States is walking the walk," Wilkins said.
Paul Martin's response I will defend Canada. Guess that is done by attacking the U.S. with potshots Mr. Martin and I thought that is only reserved for European leaders such as Schroeder who was recently ousted and noted for his anti-U.S. statements especially around election time in Deutschland. The U.S. - Canada relationship has fallen a long way down and here I am thinking George Bush and Jean Chretien were the problem, one's gone and nothing has changed.
