opinions needed: dj/promo crews (research)

Hey guys. I'm currently working on my final research project for a class at the U. My topic is dj & promo crews - how they work, some of their history, and their effects on the scene (specifically in the midwest).

I've emailed a few of the promoters in the area for some opinions, but I'd also like to hear from those who aren't as intesnsely involved with the scene (djs, friends of djs, casual fans, cuddle puddle members, etc.)

I'd greatly appreciate it if you guys could drop a couple thoughts on the subject. Anything would help. With your consent I may quote parts of your opinions that I find most relevant/intruiging in my paper.

Here are just a couple quick questions to get some ideas going:

Why did crews first form?
Do they unite or divide the "scene"?
Are they viewed as elitist?
Is it necessary to be involved with a crew to become a successful dj?
From the outside, how do crews appear to get along?
Are crews just equivalent to "raver gangs"?

Again, these are just a few starting points. Feel free to bring up anything.

And if you'd feel more comfortable sharing your thoughts via email, feel free: tylerc1[at]gmail[dot]com

I'd appreciate any participation at all. Thanks a lot guys!

Good luck. I don't know how to answer those questions. I don't know what a raver gang is. I can say that promotional groups help the scene a little. They bring in the big djs with the big money and what not. As for whether they unite or divide the scene, probably a mixture really. The smaller djs & producers don't have the capital to compete, its just like any other buisness really. However, those groups also raise djs and producers, and bring the up and comers through the ranks....its really just a question of making the right connections and a lot ...A LOT...of hardwork. A good person to contact on this would be the djs directly since they would be able to answer the questions directly. ALso, other sites like DetroitClubScene.com will have some forums that may help your research...good luck man.

There is a great book Called Generation extasy. It talks a lot about the movement of the culture.

Trust me, expectations are low here. I've posted this on mnvibe too, and I'm hoping for a decent response there.

dubblies - thanks for your input man. i hit up the MN scene page, but i'll try to hit up a few other areas as well.
