xbox help.....
My xbox dvd drive recently went kerry packer (2 hours into fif06) so now i need to get a new one.
Does anyone know if the thomson or samsung drives made for xbox will work given mine currently uses a philips? Also besides ebay do u know where i can get one locally?
Would appreciate any help!

any drive should work fine afaik
samsung are rated the best for compatibility (as in media compatibility)
the philips are a very mixed bag - there's some that are decent, or ones like mine that are worst drive ever made (I ended up adjusting the pot so the lasers a bit stronger, it was pathetic and is still shitty but a lot better anyways)
thompson are somewhere in the middle
I dunno what prices are like now, but I do remember looking for a new xbox dvd drive myself and they're a damn RIP off. I would think the best solution is to try get a 2nd hand broken xbox where the dvdrom is alright and rip it out. and I suppose if you do that, don't get one manufactured too long ago, so better chance of the drive lasting longer...
edit: quick look on ebay, and there's actual drives for sale!

Yeah i got told that only drives made for xbox (philips/thomson/samsung) would work but wasnt sure if they were all interchangable.
Looks like it works out to about $50 thru ebay but would prefer to buy it from a physical store if anyone knows where sells them.

i think he means so he can wander down right this moment and continue to lead Birmingham to victory until they are toppled by Tottenham in PC vs. XBOX online gameplay

yeah the xbox drives are different to pc drives - 1 they can read dvd's backwards (that's how xbox dvds are read - for protection so you can't just throw them into your dvd rom in your pc and copy...), and also they differ slightly in wiring interface
for non-ebay.. i dunno any, but search for xbox on here, there's lots, cant vouch for any of them, and well considering they're involved in dodgy business, not much can be said other than take ****caution****!! I guess calling up and asking how much won't hurt http://www.comtrader.com.au/showads.php?sc=4
