Should Toronto have cameras everywhere like in England?

A lot of people are saying that every street and every neighbourhood in Toronto should have cameras monitoring everyone's moves.

Do you think we should do this?

I think this is a band aid solution. Why not go after the source of the crime as well as implement tougher sentances? Why further victimize the honest citizen by invading his privacy? The cameras in england can work very well ill admit. But i have also heard about the police using it to catch and fine litterers and charge teenagers with loitering. This is what i fear would happen with cameras here.

But what if you do get caught having a leak and they use the footage against you?

I will postulate that EVERYONE eventually breaks the law in some form. Whether it's speeding or peeing in the ally. Do you really want big brother watching your EVERY move?

I dont.

I say have cameras on every street corner, every stop sign, every traffic light controlled intersection. Also have photo radar on every bridge on every road where the speed limit is 80 km/hr or greater. I say have the government watch everything we do....we should have camera's in all rooms of our house except the bedroom as the courts have already said the government doesn't belong there.

But it WONT mean that. The only way we can do this is to address the social problems that cause it AS WELL AS TOUGHER SENTENCING.

Have cameras stopped armed robberies from happening at convenience stores?

Im fine with cameras in some public places but not on every street corner where the fuzz can keep track of everytime i come and go from my house.

Dude....... THE FUZZ???? did I somehow end up on SmokeyAndTheBanditAddict.com by mistake? Srsly, the fuzz? I haven't heard that in a coon's age!

okay now, mockery aside. I agree that I would not want cameras on every street corner. My initial thought is that the benefit to society wouldn't offset the invasion into privacy. That said I have seen no figures regarding the impact they have had in the UK so I must admit that I am illequiped to make any real judgement other then a gut reaction.... but my gut reaction is that I would not approve of this.

Wow I agree with Jay! Focusing on the roots of this issue will get far better results than scaring off criminals with cameras. However in light of the BS of the 26th I kind of wish we had cameras in place in busy/high risk centres - simply to aid in the arrest and torture of these sensless fucks.

As long as cameras are not abused in ways like Jay mentioned I'm sure they would act as a deterant or at least move illicit activity to the back alleys where they should be. As Canadians we are so concerned about privacy issues - some warranted ie credit/identity theft. However is see nothing wrong by being filmed walking down the street. If your doing nothing wrong there is nothing to be concerned about.

despite my objection to the proposal I would have to say that if they were to go ahead with this plan I would not have any objection to the state using video footage of someone pissing in the street as evidence with which to prosecute them. Breaking the law is breaking the law and if the crown elects to prosecute they should be able to use all constatutionally allowed relevant evidence availible to them.
