This winds me up with beatport too.

Certain labels (superstar germany being one that springs to mind that does this a lot) often restrict the territories able to download some tracks- either because they are planning a relase later on, or they just dont want to have them circulating in that location.

Stupid if you ask me.

its because of recordlabels having rights to the same song at different areas. For example: Vandit has rights to PVD in germany, Mute in the states, Positiva in the UK.. its complicated. Luckily the "not available at your country" tabs dont pop up that often, but It sure makes you angry.

I wonder why is it different to buy 12" from juno or chemical and then have it shipped to your country. I mean you never get these "not available" messages at these stores.

This is me purely guessing but I think it's because it's much more difficult for labels to control vinyl distribution.
There should indeed be those things with vinyl as well I think but vinyl imports and such are such a common occurance that it isn't tracked at all.

With digital it is much easier for labels to have control of the material and decide what can and can't be available to certain regions.

it is rediculous because they can't stop you from buying the vinyl and ripping it to digital

but maybe that is what they want you to do... vinyl does cost quite a bit more and regardless of the extra costs associated with it im sure there is a reason for that

i have yet to see the catalogue from the vandit label go digital yet.... wouldn't matter to me anyway as i have all the vinyls i want from that label

You could make a deal with someone in a permitted country to get the download for you. Swap him a tune for example.

The way they detect where you are is by IP address (for at least one online store). It is possible to use a proxy server or similar, to get a different address, then you can buy the download.

You can get _most_ of the Vandit tracks at vonyc.com in wav format. A few releases are still missing.

You've inspired me to figure out how to do all the things you say to do in that post...

or you could send the label an email like this:

"i like "release x" a lot and was going to buy it from "store x" but since it was unavailable to me as i live in "country x" i had to illegally download it!"

This is the common "fix" however it doesn't work when sites validate your location by your credit card billing address you must have on file to make the purchase. One site that comes to mind is Ministry of Sounds online mp3 shop.
