Something Pretty Cool - Visual Search Engine: MP3 Musicvine

I just stumbled on this today... Looks pretty cool. It's called MusicVine from MP3.com

It's a visual search engine that shows how artists relate to each other using Spheres and 'vines' to connect them all.

Sphere sizes show how much that artist is an influence in the style or genre, sphere colors denotes the artist's sound in relation to others around it.

Try it out:

http://www.mp3.com/musicvine/index.php

and here's the FAQ link:

http://www.mp3.com/faq/faq4.php

Interesting but rather useless IMO.

It didn't even have Armin Van Buuren.

WTF ... that search engine is pretty fine for medium uses, but its not very accurate. Some "related" artists are quite bizarre ... like The Who and Sex Pistols relating to The Orb.

Heck, they didnt have INFECTED MUSHROOM ... lol ... or look at search results for SASHA ...

I guess they are mostly mainstream based!

I liked the results for one of my favourite artists, 808 State, however, I think the result was missing a key artist in similarity - ORBITAL!

This is a rip-off of an older "music web" that actually did have all the electronic music genres in it... I wish I could remember the site, the graphics weren't as fancy - I'm sure someone here can remember.

Yeah.. in their FAQ they even said that there is most likely some unrelated connections and through time those inaccuracies will be worked out of the system.

And what was wrong with Sasha? you need to click on the Blue sphere (the right-most sphere) when you search for him. That should produce some more relevant results.

Nah, you're thinking of the Ishkur guide, which is great, but what I'm referring to is literally the exact same thing as the site Max posted but with more artists and less graphics (none of the bubbles and stuff - it's just floating text and the shade/distance from center determines the relevancy).

Someone at work might remember the URL, I'm gonna try and find out tomorrow...
