I find that almost always: Large chain stores such as "Best Buy" and "Circuit City" are able to offer the lowest prices on the newest, most popular, top brand models of electronic hardware.
But these large stores do not sell older models/less popular models/ and less popular brands - these you can find at the smaller electronic stores, but it is hard to tell if you are getting a good price or not because it is hard to find other places that sell the same exact item to compare the price.
What i mean by ripped off:
example - my relative from europe thought she could find a deal so she went to a small electronics store in manhattan and bought a fax machine/tel/answering machine, and took it back to europe. When i visited her, I installed the fax for her. I always am suspect of these little stores so i looked carefully at the machine. On the bottom were some scratches - new stuff usually has no scratches at all. I was going to record a message but first I pressed the play message button and there was already a message on the machine, and it was not a demo message or something. This machine was used! She had paid about $200 for it I think, about the same price as she would have paid at a non-underground store for a brand new machine.
Basically, In my experience, these stores most of the time do not sell new electronics stolen off the back of trucks at rock bottom prices, but rather they sell models that are a year or several years old or used stuff, and it is hard to know if you are really getting a decent price or not. You have to trust the guys who work at the store - usually the owner - and in my experience this guy is a lying, pushy crooked salesman. And there is no return policy at these small stores like there is at "Best Buy" and "Circuit City" so you are not guaranteed to be able to return your purchase if there is a problem.
My final point: look around have fun don't be pressured to buy,
the main thing is to feel comfortable with the thing you are buying, maybe it was a good deal, maybe it was not, it does not matter as long as YOU FEEL you got a good deal, because if you feel you got a good deal, you will be happy with the product for a long time and satisfied, and then if you are happy and satisfied then it actually IS a good deal and worth the price. (strange but it works)
