New York City bans concerts bigger than 50,000

Not surprising in this age of "ban everything for every reason"

Im surprised they are even allowed to have anything in parks anymore other than using them as doggy toilets.

But at least they have that problem. Toronto took care of it's festival problems in 1999. We cant even have 4000 people show up in orangeville without having old farts complain about it. Thank god the toronto island residents dont live next to central park eh?

quote:
NEW YORK (AP) _ An era of huge public happenings on Central Park's grandest open space, the Great Lawn, came to a quiet end Friday with the formalization of a new rule limiting the size of gatherings there.

Starting in 2006, the parks department will allow no more than 50,000 people at a time on the 13-acre green oval, which has been the site of some of the park's most memorable events.

Paul Simon played the lawn in 1991, drawing half a million people. Luciano Pavarotti sang opera to a throng almost as large. Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass on the lawn in 1995 before 125,000 faithful. In 1982, hundreds of thousands attended an anti-nuclear demonstration.

But as memorable as those events were, they did awful things to the park's grass, city officials said.

The city began limiting the size of events there in 1997, after spending $18.2 million to restore a lawn that, in those days, had largely become a dust bowl.

A move to formalize the limit, however, didn't take place until 2004, when the parks department turned down an anti-war group's request to hold a 250,000-person demonstration on the Great Lawn during the Republican National Convention.

The new rule may be welcomed by routine park-goers, who use the wide open space with spectacular views of Manhattan's skyline for sunbathing and ball playing in the summer.

Concerts won't go away entirely. Future events that will squeak under the 50,000-person limit include shows by the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.

So wait, they're banning enormous events because it ruins the lawn? Needs more Astroturf.

North Americans care about stupid things way too much.

didnt they raid pacha new york on its grand opening?

Whats wrong with north america?

This whole continent needs an enema

One thing i find disturbing is how you now need permits in many places to demonstrate against the government issuing the permits. And that the government can deny the permit. If thats not totalitarian than what is?

Banning parties bigger than 50'000???

OH BOO-FUCKING-HOOO!!! They should be so lucky to have the capacity to even do something like that.

If I hear 1 person bitch about that, I think they seriously have some fucking issues. Try partying in a place where max cap is 2,500

politicians will never ban things THEY LIKE TO DO.

We'll never have laws banning golf for example.

or as i said, a place like ontario where wakestock and WEMF gets run out of small towns because old people cant close their windows for one night a year.

and dont even try to have it in the middle of the city because then EVERYONE would bitch.

Unless of course it involves the rolling stones because middle aged politicians love them.
