some of the remixes i hear in the TA forums sound like they had to have had access to remix packs, is there anywhere in particular to go to find them?

Competitions are held on various sites incl. Acid Planet where samples can be obtained. But, yes in many cases particularly in trance a decent MIDI will suffice.
