Ok so last night i got to headline for the biggest regular house night in the city (which isn't very big). It was good fun, even though my mixing was prettttty shit, oh well. It was annoying i only had a 2.5 hour set from just before 11ish to 1:20. There is a law here that all non-hotel clubs have to shut by 1:30. So i had to program the night to go from chilled out warm up, to crazy banging peak hour in that time. I can play a warm up set easy, it was just annoying that there was like ZERO people there until 11:45/12.
Luckily but 12:30 the floor had filled up and people started to dance like mad. I knew I had them at 12:30 when i dropped Beckers - Switch (Original Mix), Someone had jst requested a vocal tune and i had read their mind and dropped that track. It's a real stormer, and from then on i just owned the fuck out of them and the sound system. I REALLLLLLLLY need more practice in a live enviroment. Some of my mixes were pretty shady, but it was awesome barely anyone understands whats a good and bad mix. Every gig is a learning experience!
Equipment:
Denon DNX-1000 or wtvr, the 4 channel Denon Mixer (The middle two channels had some fader troubles, they would cut in and out occasionally, Thank god the denon has the matrix so i could easily change the channel)
2 Denon 5000s (I reeeallly dont like the platter on these... still good players on 4X pitch though... i just dont like the feel)

But the biggest equipment fuckup was the fucking table! Ah!! Holy shit, it was so short! My back hurt like fuck when i got home!

may i ask what way you cue in the headphones in a club?

had a pretty good gig last night (crowd was dancing having a great time) and i was mixing well. however i had the fcukin worst night in the booth.
at 8pm when i had finished wiring in the decks, i told the tech to switch me onto the club sound system. well music came on alrite but it was the DJ from the other room! couldnt find the guy for 15 mins so i had to wait for him to come back to sort it out. once that was done i thought right lets start my set no more probs. track one plays fine, start mixing in track 2, it comes out very low on the master. not the needles fault but rather the connector on the tonearm. needed a new turntable so for a half hour while they go get a spare from a nearby club, im spinning one tune, turning down the volume, and replacing it with another record. finally the next turntable arrives and this one seems to be working alrite, but as the guy is wiring in the grounds you hear static bursts over the club system. after that things were fine....for a while.
at about 12 one of my needles breaks. have NO CLUE how this happened. shure whitelabels, 1 month old, correct weight/height settings and i dont scratch or cue too heavily. it was just playing the record then all of a sudden it starts skipping like crazy until finally it just slid along the record. i was incensed. i quickly threw on a CD with 3 songs mixed back to back while i investigated the problem. the stylus was short and bent a little to the left (like nous dick) when it would be perfectly straight. tried pushing it back into place which worked a little. the needle would track but i had to be very gentle and girly (like nou) when cueing as it didnt track when going backwards.
during all this is i was playing a great set and the crowd were going wild and for the last 90 mins i really got into it and had a good time, forgetting all the previous trouble. when i dropped the last record, there was a huge roar of approval from the crowd and that made me smile. when i turned the music off they were shouting "MORE MORE MORE" but the powers said no. then to round off my night my headphones feel off the table, smacked the ground and snapped. RIP HDJ1000s. Well that summed up the kinda night i was having

i dunno man. you might be thinking that all hip-hop DJ-ing is just cutting the next track in. i'm more of a mixing person where you can atually hear the transition.. so there's still a lot of track selection that has to be done properly in hip-hop.
i guess i just got bored with trance.. i mixed trance long enough that i can now mix harmonically, pick a decent tracklist with good flow, and can make almost no beatmatching errors (i'm not trying to sound like i'm bragging, because i'm not). i got bored with matching the 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, 3, 4. gets kinda old after doing it for 4 years.. or maybe i'm not as big of a trance head as some here are
i mix mostly hip-hop now.. still play some house occasionally and some trance, but not often.
sorry for hijacking the topic. stories? there is nowhere here to get gigs, so i have none. but i'm moving to a bigger city soon and am already talking to some people about playing at their venues.. so i'll check back later if that happens

Well my last gig was horrible. It was supposed to be 3 DJs all together including my self. I was supposed to spin sometimes before 12am for an hour or so. I get there at 10pm pumped. 10:30pm rolls by nothing. 11pm rolls by nothing. 12 am rolls by the same dj still playing and the other never showed up. I get pissed off go upstairs and ask when I am going on , he goes NOW! He puts his shit down and leaves! So I look down and what the hell do I see... his equipment from home is starring at me. Never used it before , all gains are screwed up , can't hear shit over the headphones cause the clubs system is in my face. So I can't even mix my first song in , I fade out slowely and put on my first track. One track , two tracks I get the hang of it working the mixer and adjusted all the gains properly and cue channels. I feel a tap on my shoulder , it's him saying "We have to get this party going again , put Tiesto Traffic on". At this point I look at the dance floor there is more people dancing than there was previously. I get so mad that I just press eject to stop the mix and take the CD out of the player while it's still playing and I say to him. " Next time don't waste my time, it's all yours". Silence on the floor people have no clue what just happened. I go downstairs he plays some garbage remix of traffic. I get even more mad at this point and go to a different room and listen to Drum and Bass all night. I will never forget that night.
