Guardian Angels

I was just walking down Yonge St. and saw a few members of The Guardian Angels patroling the street. They seemed very friendly and were shaking hands with people up and down the street.I was happy to see them there and thought that it was a good sign.

David Miller and the chief of police have been outspoken saying they think that it is a bad idea to have them here, and that the only thing that needs to be done is to have an increased police presence.

Personally I think that Miller and the chief of police are being naive thinking that first of all they will increase the police presence in an effective way, and that having the guardian angels here in any way impedes police progress. I feel like Miller is worried that them being here makes the problems in toronto more high profile, and that is the reason he doesn't want them here.

For those of you who don't know the guardian angels are a volunteer group of people based in new york that started with the purpose of stopping gang violence. They do not carry guns and are easty to recognize because they wear red jackets and berrets.

What do you guys think, should they be here? Is it helpful or harmful?

I saw it on Tv the other day. I think its a good thing for the city but I think gangs will target them now. I wouldn;t be surprised if any are injured in the next month!

I saw a snippit of this story on the news. Heard they were here a number of years ago and the community didn't like it. And I questioned why? They are here to help and do good. They are volunteers and obviously care about spreading the good work they've done elsewhere.

Good point about the "high profile thing" by having them here - that never dawned on me. But I certainly hope Miller and the Police Chief aren't trying to supress the gang/violence issue we have. I say bring on all the help and support we can get before it REALLY gets out of hand. I bet they have a lot of expertise and this being a relatively new situation for Toronto, we need to rely on people who've seen this before and have worked through it successfully.

The red jackets are cool too!

get the guns away from these kids, send in the cops to infiltrate the gangs and their weapons. If the cops can't cut it send in the fucking army.

I say, "Good".

They're law abiding citizens and not some vigilante group out there folks.
They know their stuff and are willing to do what most of us would only think about.
I'm happy they're here!!

I dont' know enough about them to say it's "good" or "bad"...but I do respect their ideals and efforts...just not sure how they will be received in 2006.

Rather than "policing", their goal seems to be more to educate, raise awareness, and get people involved in the community instead of ignoring the problems occuring in their own neighbourhoods.

good!

I think it could be a good idea.. although if I were in their position, I think I may be a little concered for my own safetly wouldn't you? Especially if you don't have the support from the city itself..

miller is a left wing thinker. Left wingers generally think that the government can do better than the private citizen. This is why i think they are against the guardian angels. I cant believe this idiot of a mayor wont even give them 5 minutes of his time to listen to what they have to say.

I hope we all remember miller's ignorance on election day this november.
