The external in will give you subtractive synthesis from an external input. Theres a decent chance that theres some sample functionality there as well but my guess is that youll have access to the envelope, filter, LFO and such as well as the effects on the synth and youll be able to use them on direct input. There isnt really anything new there though. The D-beam is, in my opinion, a pretty damn nice controller for good organic feeling automation stuff. Basicly it has an infrared led and sensor and depending on how close you hand is to the led will determine how much light gets reflected back to the sensor, which in turn takes that voltage change (determined by brightness) and converts it to midi. It gives a different way of controlling stuff compared to standard knobs and sliders.
