Um, whats the purpose of the Pioneer DVJ? Each DVJ is hooked up to a monitor and you mix not only the videos, but the songs.

i'm not asking about DVJs vs CDJs, i know normal CDJs can't play video. but what i'm asking is can a normal mixer mix video. and i'm just wondering why? different circuitry?

You apparently dont understand what I meant. Remove the music from the videos when they are playing in the DVJ. And instead of needing the headphones, you have the monitors that are plugged into each individual DVJ as a cueing function. Voulla, you can mix videos. Either way, mixing videos is absolutely pointless.

okay.. so my original question (no, apparently i don't understand your answer) can i still use a normal mixer for this? i agree, video mixing is pointless, but my friend wants to try out some DVJing at our next party so we're trying to figure out what it will take.

From my experience in audio/video, the answer would be no...just like you stated in your first post all the connectors are just rca...I'd assume you might be able to mix the audio of the video but thats as far as it would go. Now, a mixer that was just released
the numark AVM02 Professional Audio/Video Mixer w/ Effects
But DJ's like Sander K have to have some sort of medium to trigger the use of the video aspect of the DVJ - it might not exactly be a mixer, but its something that you can control what goes on.

Once again, the answer is no. It can't be done.
Even with something like the Pioneer DVJ-X1s, you still need a video mixer as well as an audio mixer. Or an audio mixer coupled with the Pioneer VSW-1 video switcher.
