Hello! Studying & Travelling in Oz

Hello AUTAs,

I'll be going to Oz for second semester on exchange in July. I'll then have one month (Dec.) of travelling and partying before coming back to the bitter cold of Toronto to finish my degree.

Need advice!! What's the best way to travel around Australia... air/rail/bus? I want to check out the east coast starting from Melbourne and hitting all majoy stops on the way to Cairns.

Does anyone have any experience on the tour buses/bus pases/ rail passes??? Any good deals you know of?

Also, I'll be going to U of Sydney - so I hope the trance scene is good in Sydney too *fingers crossed*

And, would it be better to stay in rez or off campus?? Any good places to rent out that you know of?

Looking forward to going to your beautiful country!

Cheers!! Lill

PS I looked in the Travelling/Working/Holidaying thread but couldn't really find the info I wanted.

Trance scene in Sydney is pretty dead at the moment, although you should keep an eye out for Trance Tribe events, as they are always good.

We still get big-name internationals coming over here, but not as often as you might be used to.

I go to University of Sydney, and I definitely recommend that you stay in University accommodation/dorms. Every that I have spoken to says it is way more fun staying on campus and going out to all the campus pubs/bars at night. It's also much more convenient, of course

lol jules

i would suggest road trip with friends up the east coast but if you are coming by yourself then i guess it isn't an option

if you actually want to travel around and see places on the way like you say then you should probably go on a bus or train but i can't really help you in terms of who to travel with and stuff sorry

I'm another Usyd person, and I agree with AJ- you should definitely stay on campus. and if you go to college, look forward to constant intoxication haha.. it's far easier meeting people on campus as well.
I wish I was living on uni grounds..!!

I doubt you'd hear much trance, if any, in sydney. But not to worry, you'll soon become accustomed to electro and house

what are you studying?

oi

Nice! i've lived here for 25 years and i've yet to visit Cairns, or anywhere other than the Gold Coast and Melbourne LOL.

Make sure you do the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. More fun if you've got some friends and hire a car though.

I'm an ol'skool Usyd'r also, though I didn't stick around long enough to get a degree there. Awesome uni. Wish I had gone ahead and rented near campus instead of training in every day from home, but you know us uni kids... always tight with what limited cash we had those days haha.

Haven't really taken any coach tours personally, but you might want to try these sites:

http://www.totaltravel.com.au
http://www.discoveraustralia.com.au/

or visit your nearest travel agent. I'm sure they'd have some info. Otherwise check out the info booths in the airports or info centre in each city.

Thanks for the tips regarding residence on campus... it's one of the bigger choices I have to make. I'll have to see how much money I'll have saved up since the less I spend during the school year, the more I'll have to travel.

I am more inclined to go into rez - if i can get a spot half way through your school year - I'm only going for 2nd semester.
And if that doesn't work out, I'll be checking out Darlington/Forest Lodge Terraces or UniLodge Sydney. Any comments on those places?

btw - studying Chemical Engineering - last year... wooo hooooo

AND there is nothing wrong with Canada except the weather is so damn unpredicatable and I'm not near the coast. Plus I've heard school is a tad easier in Sydney vs. Toronto... I'd rather enjoy my last year rather than get slaughtered with homework/projects/tests/etc etc.

thats a great opportunity to finish your studies in australia, im sure your gonna have a great time. every canadian ive every met thats gone to australia usually wants to stay.

its the whole vice versa thing. canadians get sick of the cold and love the hot aussie summers. while alot of australians like me love the snow and love it in canada.

canadians and australians get along better than any 2 cultures i know.
