You could argue that recognition on the world stage is dependant on the marketability of the athlete and the popularity of the track event in question.
i.e. 100M/4x100/Long Jump always get more media attention than Shot Put, Javelin, Hammer Toss, etc. In the 80s it was because of their success in those events that Flo-Jo and Carl Lewis became popular long after the track meets. Carl Lewis even had a rap video - lol.
And - when it comes down to a showdown of strength it is easier to market the male aspect of the sport - tying in with social norms.
